I don't know about you but I can't scroll through LinkedIn without seeing someone post the usual "would you jump out of a plane for £100K? You would if it was on the ground! Moral of the story is: know all the facts" Bleh! I can't stand these posts...
The fact is (pun well and truly intended) that it depends on where and who that information is coming from before you can know how factual it actually is. People lie all the time, people make mistakes all the time, people interpret things differently all the time.
Something I am asked about by SME businesses all the time is "The cloud". If you've ever seen liar liar with Jim Carrey, you'll know what I mean when I say "The cloooooud! It's the CLOOOOOUD" and those who don't will just have to miss out on a really cool inside joke right now (awww).
10 facts about the cloud small businesses need to know
- Cloud Computing is up to 40 times more cost effective for an SMB, compared to running its own IT system
- 47% of companies said they witness lower operating costs after cloud adoptions
- 75% of businesses report that service availability improved since moving to the cloud
- 52% of companies reported increased data efficiency and utilization
- Recovery times for SMB are four times faster for businesses using cloud computing when compared to those not utilizing cloud services
- 62% of respondents of a Microsoft survey said their levels of privacy protection increased as a result of moving to the cloud
- 70% of businesses report that they've been able to reinvest funds back into their business as a result of moving to the cloud
- 94% of SMBs have experienced security benefits in the cloud that they didn’t have with their on-premises services
- Companies now run 79% of their workload in the cloud
- 81% of organizations expect it to help them compete more efficiently
Before you start running towards the nearest provider you know asking them to throw all your services up in the cloud and start saving you loads of cash, there is one more fact you need to know: None of this will be a reality if you don’t spend some serious cash on your internet connectivity. FACT.
There will be people who tell you it “can” work on broadband or it “can” work on FTTC (fibre broadband) and that is technically a fact but it is also a fact that banging your head against a wall “can” burn up to 150 calories an hour.
I sound like my Mother here when I say “just because you can doesn’t mean you should!”
If you're moving to the cloud it would be wise to get yourself a reliable and managed connection first.
