Cloud is the universally accepted platform that enables a more agile and responsive organisation but consuming cloud in a way that a business can also transform requires a coordinated effort across multiple domains. All aspects of the people, process and technology pillars of an organisation are impacted as it matures from current to new operational models. Organisations typically start their cloud adoption journey with the intention of saving costs but the larger benefit to an organisation lies in enabling faster time to market for new products and capabilities.
Luckily, Amazon Web Services has a Cloud Transformation Maturity Model (CTMM) which guides organisations to measure their readiness for the AWS Cloud, build an effective cloud transformation strategy, and drive an effective execution plan. Though this model was created specifically for AWS cloud, but it is generic enough to be adapted for any cloud. Using this tool organisations can assess the maturity of their cloud adoption through four key stages: project, foundation, migration, and optimisation. The figure at the top shows the key activities which occur during these four stages of cloud transformation. It’s not meant to be a one-time transformation and you may go through each of the stages in an incremental, iterative, and adaptive manner multiple times for various business units or groups.
How do you drive your cloud transformation journey? You can use the table below to find out which stage you are in, correlate to the challenges, plan transformation activities and track the maturity outcomes. In other words, you create your transformation roadmap which would be a living document continuously changing as you iteratively try to increase you maturity. Each stage brings an organisation’s people, processes, and technologies closer to realizing its vision of IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS).
