Cloud Security Alliance Summit 2018

I was so honored to have Alex Philips of National Oilwell Varco (NOV) join me on stage today at the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) Summit at RSA in San Francisco.

I wanted to share here on LinkedIn some of what Alex conveyed to the audience during his inspiring presentation.

NOV is a Fortune 200 company with 36,000 employees in 66 counties. NOV wanted to transform its network with SD-WAN, but needed to be able to secure it and maintain control. Deploying appliances in each location would have been, according to Alex, “appliance hell.” Instead, NOV deployed Zscaler cloud security—completing its Zscaler rollout in 60 days—and uses our platform to secure all users on its direct-to-cloud architecture. As a result, NOV has saved significantly on MPLS costs while providing a 10-20x faster user experience.

Through the Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) service, NOV is also providing fast and direct access to internally managed apps in a hybrid environment—those in the DC and public clouds—without ever bringing a user on a network or having to manage countless VMs. This approach is particularly helpful in the integration of acquired companies and is an important component of the Zscaler platform to NOV, which has completed more than 300 acquisitions in the last 20 years.

Alex talked about the four-phased approach he took to deploying Zscaler. Starting with Office 365 connectivity and optimization, followed by SSL decryption, protecting “road warriors,” and providing secure access to internal applications with ZPA.

Thank you, Alex, for taking the stage with me today and sharing your cloud journey with the audience at the CSA Summit. It is always a privilege to help spread the word on cloud transformation through the visionary stories of our customers. NOV is no exception. Having started its journey to the cloud early, NOV is now reaping the rewards of its transition to a cloud-first security approach.
