Common Mistakes in Datacentre to Cloud Migration and How to Avoid Them

Rapid digitalisation and the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to a surge in cloud computing requirements prompting many Australian businesses to migrate from traditional on-premises data centers to the cloud. However, cloud migrations are complex and prone to mistakes. We outline below two common mistakes that we see companies encountering during cloud migrations.

The first obstacle many organisations face is the failure to develop a comprehensive datacenter exit plan. Understanding the complexities of the existing on-premises ecosystem and formulating a robust migration plan is crucial. When this step is skipped or rushed, it leads to an underestimating of potential migration challenges and can establish a reactive approach to the entire process - a sure warning sign of a disaster during a complex migration.?

The second common mistake is the failure to set realistic expectations for the migration process. This often shows up in the absence of a testing phase in organisations who don't truly grasp the scale of cloud migration. Cloud migration is a significant challenge that requires careful planning and testing. Skipping the testing phase can lead to project failure or delays due to unforeseen issues. Conducting a test migration helps determine the timeline, identify challenges, optimise IT, and minimise downtime. It is important to account for hidden complexities during the production migration process.

Along with the above, there are many other issues that can slow companies down when implementing a technical migration solution including:

  • outdated software stacks
  • inexperience and lack of knowledge in cloud environments
  • organisational paralysis
  • the shortage of cloud experts.

Our recent blog dives into migration mistakes, how to mitigate them and why external support is highly beneficial during a migration.

Search Engines race to get ahead with AI The race to get ahead in the use of AI tools for search engine technology is unequivocally on. Microsoft had recently opened up its AI-powered Bing to all users who are accessing the search engine via Microsoft’s Edge browser. This move may have contributed to a considerable increase in daily users over the past few months. Google have doubled their efforts and have just released Bard to the public as well. Users can benefit from summaries of search results, chat with the ability to answer further questions and craft written content based on search results. The race is truly on.
Meta recently reported having taken down more than 1,000 malicious URLs to prevent them being shared across their services. The URLs leveraged OpenAI's ChatGPT as bait to spread about 10 malware families since March 2023.
