As more advanced cloud computing continues to be offered and becomes more affordable and available to individuals, people can accomplish more complex tasks. That adds to the value of the virtual workforce and transfers some of the power previously held by enterprises to that workforce, as well. Further, it adds abilities and value to the freelancer or contractor, as that person can do much more complicated tasks for the company. 84 While cloud computing is still developing, it is changing rapidly and producing added value for companies and freelancers alike. All indications are that cloud computing will continue to be valuable to companies and the virtual workforce for the foreseeable future and that its value and usage will likely increase with time. These indications are good news for companies that develop cloud computing applications, as well as for the companies and freelancers who use them. Opportunities for further development of the working relationship between companies and freelancers will increase.
In the past, most opportunities involving technology were in the enterprise realm, left to companies that could afford to purchase, maintain, and use new technology. Now, there are applications available for individuals and freelancers, so they can do the same things big companies can do. These applications are highly relevant because they offer freelancers a chance to build their strength in the marketplace and compete with larger and more established businesses.
Small companies are often more agile, cost-effective, efficient, and able to offer better products and services for a much lower price. These companies also generally have reduced ownership costs. Since each contract worker or freelancer is a business owner or sole proprietor, these single individuals can join the ranks of small companies. With the increase of technology, a "one-man show" is now able to do as much, in many cases, as a larger competitor, and for far less money.
Additionally, freelancing is a more viable option for people who want to get work done and do more for themselves without the need to be employed at a large company. Many cloud computing applications are free or very low-cost today, so starting a career in freelancing is an easy way to develop skills, gain work experience, and establish financial security. As time moves on, more cloud computing resources will be created and developed, which will grant freelancers even more opportunities to grow their businesses without needing to be an employee of a company.?
This change from enterprise-only technology to options for individuals is where the revolution of the virtual workforce will start. Especially for Generation V, this technological advancement will disrupt the virtual workforce’s world. No longer will workers have to be part of a big company to be successful or gain access to the technology they need and want to make a living. As the Virtual Generation moves into the workforce in large numbers, changes taking place in cloud computing will spread.
There is also a significant benefit for companies hiring workers in the Virtual Generation, as they do not need to hire full-time, permanent employees with benefits and long-term commitments. Particularly when the virtual freelance worker can provide the same services with little investment, companies would be wise to choose a contract worker to save money and still get excellent quality and value.
As freelancers and contract workers begin to make up a more substantial part of the virtual workforce, a more permanent but remote workforce will develop. The concept of permanence will also shift, from full-time employees to potential long-term contracts with freelancers. Additionally, instead of the organizations being permanent, they will be the ones changing. The virtual workforce will then become a more permanent factor.
Traditionally, the workforce essentially orbited around organizations’ point of view. Now, organizations will be the ones in orbit, as they revolve around a far more virtual workforce. This reversal is on its way and will change the working world for many people.
Cloud computing plays a big part in changing the landscape for workers and companies. Enterprise-only applications are becoming a thing of the past, and as a result, more virtual workers are focusing on how they can use cloud computing to make their lives better and accomplish more while still working from home or other remote locations. Demands on this type of computing are higher than they used to be, but that means change will come faster as companies work to keep up with the changing demands of businesses and contractors.
The voices of freelancers and contractors are much louder than they were in the past, simply because there are so many. As time moves on and Generation Virtual comes to the forefront of the working world, having enterprise-level solutions available to individuals will become the norm, which will change how work is accomplished. Freelancers will be able to operate companies of their own that larger businesses will reach out to and contract with for projects and other types of work.

The enterprise system used in the working world today has its basis in large companies that hire smaller companies and individuals. The future enterprise system will be based on smaller companies and individuals who work with more prominent companies as their clients. This system reverses the current way of doing business, and eventually, that system will shift to a more meshed network of smaller organizations and individuals working collectively to solve common problems and provide highly customized solutions.
