Is the cloud the built-in self-destruct?
Some years ago, I wrote my thoughts about IoT!
Now Apple has released the HomePod device. What is the HomePod? Simply explained, a speaker! What is so special about this speaker? It must be special, it’s an Apple device! The “ordinary” speaker I’m used to had simply two wire connectors +/-, that was all. Nowadays new ports are being introduced, 3.5 mm jack, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or USB. The HomePod is using nothing of this connectivity options. It needs to be activated by an iOS Device, and , the speaker is connected to the Apple Cloud.
Let us now jump five years into the future. The Apple Cloud is no longer supporting the HomePod version 1. What do I own now? A 350,- € pincushion? Because I don’t have physical connectors built into the speaker there is no alternative to connect any output device physically to this speaker.
Some cloud-services are making perfect sense from my point of view, Email, calendar, address book, file-storage etc. To cut a long story short, everything on an information base. But this actual trend to “in-cloud” everything? Where is my benefit to have my wireless access points controlled by a cloud service, or my thermostat, or my speaker?
Maybe this is a typical German point of view, I don’t want to buy every three years a new technical product, this is not “green” at all! But with this combined cloud approach I see the danger of a planned, or built-in, obsolescence on a whole new level.
Do you agree?
