Closing the Year with Purpose

As the year draws to a close, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush—final deadlines, endless to-do lists, and planning for the year ahead. But I want to encourage you to pause, even for just a moment. Leadership is demanding, and focusing only on what’s next is tempting. But reflection is a gift we give ourselves—a chance to stop and honor the journey we’ve been on.
This week, I invite you to take that pause. Let’s reflect on what this year has brought us: the wins that made us proud, the challenges that shaped us, and the growth that carried us through. Let’s also take a moment to hold gratitude for it all—the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Gratitude isn’t just about looking back; it’s about grounding ourselves in the present so we can move forward with clarity and intention.
Reflection: Seeing the Whole Picture
When you think back on this year, what comes to mind? For many of us, it’s a mix of pride, exhaustion, and maybe even a little relief. Leadership isn’t easy. It asks so much of us. But taking the time to reflect gives us perspective—it allows us to see the full picture of who we are and how we’re growing.
Ask yourself:
This isn’t just about patting yourself on the back (though you absolutely should). It’s about recognizing how far you’ve come and honoring the work you’ve done to get here.
Gratitude: Grounding Yourself in What Matters
Let’s talk about gratitude. As leaders, we’re so often focused on what still needs to be done, what’s missing, or what could be better. But gratitude shifts that focus. It reminds us of the abundance already present in our lives.
Gratitude isn’t just about being thankful for the good things—it’s about finding value in the whole journey. It’s about acknowledging the people, experiences, and even the challenges that have shaped you.
Here’s a practice I’ve been leaning into:
Gratitude has a way of opening us up—of connecting us to the bigger picture and grounding us in what truly matters.
Looking Ahead: Setting a Vision for the New Year
As we turn toward the year ahead, let’s talk about vision—not the kind that’s all about resolutions and checklists, but a deeper kind—one that’s rooted in your values and aligned with who you are becoming.
Here’s how I approach it:
Your vision doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to feel true to you.

Take a Moment for Reflection and Vision
Set aside 15-20 minutes this week to do this exercise:
Reflect on the Past Year
Write down:
Express Gratitude
Write down:
Set Your Vision
Write down:
This isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about creating space for clarity and intention as you move forward.
Final Thoughts
Reflection and gratitude are more than year-end practices—they’re tools for growth and transformation. By pausing to honor your journey, you create space to step into the next chapter with purpose and confidence.
