Closing the Year with Purpose

Closing the Year with Purpose

As the year draws to a close, it’s easy to get caught up in the rush—final deadlines, endless to-do lists, and planning for the year ahead. But I want to encourage you to pause, even for just a moment. Leadership is demanding, and focusing only on what’s next is tempting. But reflection is a gift we give ourselves—a chance to stop and honor the journey we’ve been on.

This week, I invite you to take that pause. Let’s reflect on what this year has brought us: the wins that made us proud, the challenges that shaped us, and the growth that carried us through. Let’s also take a moment to hold gratitude for it all—the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Gratitude isn’t just about looking back; it’s about grounding ourselves in the present so we can move forward with clarity and intention.

Reflection: Seeing the Whole Picture

When you think back on this year, what comes to mind? For many of us, it’s a mix of pride, exhaustion, and maybe even a little relief. Leadership isn’t easy. It asks so much of us. But taking the time to reflect gives us perspective—it allows us to see the full picture of who we are and how we’re growing.

Ask yourself:

  • What moments this year made you proud? These could be big milestones or quiet wins that remind you of your strength.
  • What challenges tested you, and how did you navigate them? The tough moments often reveal what we’re capable of. What did those moments teach you?
  • What patterns do you notice? Maybe you’ve found habits or routines that really worked—or ones that didn’t. Reflection isn’t about judgment; it’s about awareness.

This isn’t just about patting yourself on the back (though you absolutely should). It’s about recognizing how far you’ve come and honoring the work you’ve done to get here.

Gratitude: Grounding Yourself in What Matters

Let’s talk about gratitude. As leaders, we’re so often focused on what still needs to be done, what’s missing, or what could be better. But gratitude shifts that focus. It reminds us of the abundance already present in our lives.

Gratitude isn’t just about being thankful for the good things—it’s about finding value in the whole journey. It’s about acknowledging the people, experiences, and even the challenges that have shaped you.

Here’s a practice I’ve been leaning into:

  • Think of three people who’ve supported you this year. Maybe it’s a colleague, a mentor, or a friend who was there for you when you needed it most. Take a moment to thank them—write a note, send a text, or just let them know you see and appreciate them.
  • Don’t forget to include yourself. Thank yourself for showing up, even when it was hard. For taking steps forward, no matter how small.

Gratitude has a way of opening us up—of connecting us to the bigger picture and grounding us in what truly matters.

Looking Ahead: Setting a Vision for the New Year

As we turn toward the year ahead, let’s talk about vision—not the kind that’s all about resolutions and checklists, but a deeper kind—one that’s rooted in your values and aligned with who you are becoming.

Here’s how I approach it:

  1. Start with your “why.” What matters most to you? What drives you as a leader? Before setting any goals, get clear on your purpose.
  2. Keep it intentional. You don’t need a laundry list of goals. Focus on a few that truly resonate. Let them reflect your values and priorities.
  3. Make it actionable. Big visions are inspiring, but they can also feel overwhelming. Break your goals into smaller steps and milestones. Progress is progress, no matter how small.
  4. Build in rest. Growth doesn’t happen when you’re running on empty. Make space for rest, reflection, and renewal—it’s not just good for you; it’s essential for your leadership.
  5. Share it. Leadership isn’t a solo act. Share your vision with the people who support and inspire you. Collaboration brings clarity and momentum.

Your vision doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to feel true to you.

Take a Moment for Reflection and Vision

Set aside 15-20 minutes this week to do this exercise:

Reflect on the Past Year

Write down:

  • Three wins you’re proud of.
  • One challenge you overcame and the lesson it taught you.
  • One habit or practice that helped you grow.

Express Gratitude

Write down:

  • Three people or experiences you’re thankful for.
  • One thing about yourself that you’re proud of or grateful for.

Set Your Vision

Write down:

  • One goal for the upcoming year that excites you.
  • One value you want to embody more fully in your leadership.
  • One habit you’ll cultivate to support your vision.

This isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about creating space for clarity and intention as you move forward.

Final Thoughts

Reflection and gratitude are more than year-end practices—they’re tools for growth and transformation. By pausing to honor your journey, you create space to step into the next chapter with purpose and confidence.

Thank you for being part of this journey. I see you, I celebrate you, and I’m so grateful to share this space with you.?
