Closing the Equity Gap on LinkedIn: How Gen Z and Millennials Can Help

I teach a CRER 137 Life and Career Planning course at Skyline College.? Most of my students range in age from 18-21.? Recently I learned that 61% of LinkedIn users fall between the ages of 25-34. That means the platform is teeming with young professions. By fostering critical thinking skills on LinkedIn, young students can become more informed users, build a strong foundation for future career exploration, and ultimately navigate the online professional landscape with confidence.???

Here's how I think Gen Z and Millennials can use the power of over 990 million LinkedIn users:?

  • Understand the platform: Have open dialog on how it can be helpful for learning about different careers, researching companies, and potentially finding internships or future jobs. Share content from professionals of different backgrounds and experiences and show a wider range of perspectives to dismantle stereotypes and inspire others.?
  • Career Exploration: Guide them to explore profiles of professionals in their areas of interest. Ask them to analyze the skills and experience listed on those profiles. Discuss how this can be beneficial for their own academic goals.?
  • LinkedIn Learning: Provides students with LinkedIn learning licenses to gain valuable skills, stay updated on industry trends, enhance their credibility, and ultimately take their careers to the next level.???
  • Jobs and Internships: LinkedIn can be your job search superpower! This can be achieved by crafting a stellar profile packed with keywords and showcase skills. Students can also network with professionals, follow dream companies, and utilize search filters to find ideal opportunities.??

Yes, I love teaching students to snoop around and look at the profiles of people working in their chosen profession—such a cool tool for seeing different career paths. Kenny Gonzalez, I like how you condensed the tools that LinkedIn has to offer to students in this article.

I would love to take your course. I started late in the game. I completed my course work and earned three degrees and certificate from CSM in the spring of 2023. I really feel stuck on how to move forward.
