Closing in on Community
Does anyone else feel the walls are closing in around us a little more each day? We’re not officially in lockdown but the recommendations that we should minimise our movements are increasingly specific, with schools the latest to be told to ‘stay put’. It’s in times like these we see the true value of community and I want to acknowledge the fact that Morton has the honour of working within a number of very, unique local communities.
It’s hard to define what really makes a community. Interestingly I’ve found that it has nothing to do with the age of the area. Morton has worked on the ground since development began in the communities of Wentworth Point and Thornton in Penrith. We have also been there as Pyrmont transformed into the thriving residential community it is today.
These are new residential developments but as the buildings have emerged, and the beautiful trees and gardens taken root, so too has a real sense of community pride and spirit. Each has a dynamic community committee that reaches out to residents and offers events designed to cater to the diverse range of needs and interests of those who live in their local area.
Thornton has a ‘Welcome Group’ of volunteers who open the local Community Centre a couple of times each week (COVID safe of course) ready to offer a smiling face and extensive knowledge of the how, who and what happens in the local area. Whilst their activities have been curtailed because of the pandemic the Wentworth Point Community Central Committee maintains an informative website and social media presence and Pyrmont Cares, collects and redistributes furniture and whitegoods to people in need across the inner city. These are all organisations doing simple things to connect and support individuals and families who live in the local area.
Our agents and Property Managers do a huge amount of research when looking to value a property for sale or lease but it is almost impossible to truly put a value on that sense of community which is so strong in precincts like Thornton, Wentworth Point and Pyrmont. There is nothing necessarily grand about what those local volunteer community groups do, but the impact they have is priceless.
It is that sense of giving, sharing and gathering together that makes a community and in these days of isolation and restrictions the huge value that exists within these communities is that residents know their neighbours. They care.
It is a privilege for our team to be able to help our clients find their own place within these great precincts.
