Closing the Chapter: Analyzing December Tech News

The last month of 2023 brought several exciting events in the world of IT that will have long-term implications for the industry.

Hot Topic: EU's AI Regulation

The EU finally implemented a law on artificial intelligence. This document establishes rules for AI use by companies and average users.

It aims to regulate the moral aspects of AI use, risks, and the limitation of algorithms by legal norms of existing legislation.

Nevertheless, the tech sector expresses concerns over the EU AI Act, labeling it as "potentially disastrous" for innovation. France and Germany caution against over-regulation, citing the need to safeguard their leading AI start-ups.

The EU's competition and digital chief, Margrethe Vestager, defends the bloc's AI Act, emphasizing that it will provide legal certainty for tech start-ups working on foundational AI models. Despite criticism from French President Emmanuel Macron, Vestager argues that the legislation will not hinder innovation but promote it by establishing clear rules for AI development and use.

Australia's Digital ID Advancements

Australia is focusing efforts on enhancing digital ID. This technology is designed for real-time user identification, such as when accessing government or banking services.

A unique feature of the system is the verification of individuals through a webcam, potentially reducing risks and improving the security of sensitive information.?

Xfinity Hack

Approximately 36 million Xfinity accounts were compromised by hackers. The vulnerability was attributed to the Citrix system used by the communications service provider for cloud computing.

As a result of the breach, hackers obtained not only real names and addresses of subscribers but also hashed passwords, transaction data, and more.

AI Resurrects Van Gogh

Van Gogh came to life at the Orsay Museum in Paris. More precisely, a group of engineers "resurrected" him in digital form using machine learning to analyze about 900 letters from the artist.

Now, the AI virtual double readily answers visitors' questions at the institution. The most popular inquiries relate to the reasons for suicide, with widespread responses being untrue.?

Hyperloop's Disappointing End

Hyperloop concluded its journey, never materializing beyond the concept stage. Richard Branson's assurances, dating back to 2017, failed to come to fruition.

The idea, promising to connect the world with a high-speed network for both cargo and passenger transport within the next 2-3 years, was officially refuted by the company's closure last week.

2024 promises to bring much news in the field of AI. I believe the AI regulation should finally be confirmed in the EU and the US, what make many people to feel more comfortable. But I share the thoughts of French President Emmanuel Macron that the regulation shouldn't block innovation. Also, it's important for the EU to not be too strict in comparison with main competitors (the US and China) to not lose time and get out of the game just because the local regulation.
