EXCEVAL?: A Sustainable Replacement for PFAS in Paper Packaging

Recently, the European Parliament adopted the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), banning food packaging with perfluorinated and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) that meet or exceed specific thresholds (Art. 5 PPWR). EXCEVAL?, developed by Kuraray, is a hydrophobically modified polyvinyl alcohol, that serves as an excellent replacement for PFAS in paper packaging.

One of the standout features of EXCEVAL? is its ability to form an excellent barrier against oxygen and grease. In gas barrier coatings, it reduces humidity absorption, providing strong protection against oxygen, carbon dioxide, and various aromas, even at high humidity. Additionally, these coatings are highly transparent, glossy, chemically resistant, and offer excellent adhesion to metallization.

When coated on paper, EXCEVAL? forms an effective oil and grease barrier due to its excellent film-forming properties. It closes the sheet and protects the fibers, thus, [MS1]?reducing liquid permeability, making it a top choice for the next generation of grease proof papers.

Furthermore, EXCEVAL??has a key sustainability benefit: Unlike conventional fluoropolymers, it is soluble in water, making this type of packaging easily recyclable in paper mills.?

Approved by the FDA for direct food contact, EXCEVAL? is highly versatile and can be used in a wide range of paper coatings. Its applications include packaging papers,?silicon release liners, thermal paper and adhesives, making it a valuable solution across multiple industries.
