Empowering Change in Tabanan

The CLOCC programme is currently serving three pilot communities in Tabanan, Bali: Bengkel Village, Dauh Peken Village, and Wongaya Gede Village.

Over the last ten months of mentoring, key lessons have emerged, including the critical importance of regional government commitment to any success, cooperation between stakeholders, clear policies, sustainable funding, and the need to drive community behavioural changes and attitudes towards waste management.

Based on this experience, CLOCC and Gocircular Indonesia (GoSirk) will extend the mentorship program for another year, aiming to serve as a model for other villages. The program uses a participatory approach to ensure solutions align with each village's unique context, fostering community ownership and responsibility for waste management.

Enabling Waste Pickers to Combat Marine Pollution with Grieg Foundation

Grieg Foundation: CLOCC's latest supporter

The GRIEG FOUNDATION are the latest funder of the CLOCC programme. Grieg will be working closely with Hand in Hand India to empower over 550 waste pickers through education, training, and economic opportunities, promoting sustainable waste management. This project aims to improve livelihoods, reduce inequalities, and protect the oceans by preventing waste leakage and increasing recycling efforts.

The waste situation on the ground in Tamil Nadu

The work is focussed on the coastal region of Tamil Nadu, home to 2.8 million people, suffers from poor and insufficient waste management. As a result, significant volumes of waste are leaked into the oceans and surrounding environment. Many residents in the region rely on the informal collection of waste to survive.?It forms part of the larger CLOCC Programme in India.

Over the past few months, our dedicated team at Hand-in-Hand has been leading an awareness raising campaign: reaching out to local schools, institutions, and going door-to-door to connect directly with communities to teach the basics of waste collection and sorting. The work has been full of learning and collaboration! Check out some more pics here.

Providing Waste Services for 14,000 Households in Banyuwangi

Through the Rijig Pradana Wetan initiative, the CLOCC programme is working with 14 rural municipalities in Banyuwangi to combat the issue of plastic waste leakage into the environment. This initiative not only addresses ocean pollution but also seeks to enhance waste management systems on land by focusing on community engagement and long-term sustainability.

We are delighted to share that the programme is now providing essential waste collection services to over 14,000 households across these municipalities, including Purwodadi Village – check out the video below.

5 years after CLOCC launched, the action plan and subsequent village support programme is already having a profound impact on the communities it has been set up for and with. The success is built on the foundation of empowering local communities to take charge of their waste, ensuring that solutions are sustainable and tailored to meet the specific needs of each village. Community-focused approaches are crucial in tapping into local knowledge, fostering ownership, and encouraging long-term behavioural change.

In Banyuwangi, this has meant working hand-in-hand with local leaders, waste collectors, and residents to create systems that are not only efficient but also foster responsibility and environmental stewardship within the community.

What is special and unique about this approach is that Banyuwangi can serve as a model for other rural communities in the region facing similar waste management challenges. By demonstrating that even basic services can have a significant impact when driven by community involvement, the programme offers a scalable and replicable blueprint for tackling plastic pollution and improving waste management across Indonesia and beyond.

Waste Master Plan Handed over in India

Ever since CLOCC launched in India in 2022, the team in Chengalpattu have been working hard to put in place the roadmap and building blocks towards a long-lasting, sustainable waste management system for a population of 2.8 million inhabitants.

The Chengalpattu Waste Master Plan (CWMP) was formally handed over on the 27th August 2024 at a stakeholder workshop with the district. It has been developed in cooperation with local partners including Hand in Hand India who have made a comprehensive assessment of the waste situation, as well as holding several stakeholder workshops.

This will ensure that a plan is in place for a waste system that is built with and for the people using it. What does this mean? When implemented, it will lead to a healthier society and a cleaner environment with waste staying out of our oceans.

CLOCC at ISWA 2024

The 2024 edition of the ISWA International Solid Waste Association World Congress took place between 15-18 September in Cape Town, South Africa. Over 1,300 waste management professionals, academics, and thought leaders from around the globe gathered to discuss pressing global and local waste challenges.

The CLOCC team actively participated with a dedicated session titled "Community of Action Against Plastic Pollution – Focus on the Marine Environment," in collaboration with ISWA, 德国国际合作机构 , PROMAR and adelphi .

This session highlighted successful strategies for reducing plastic pollution, emphasizing stakeholder collaboration, public awareness campaigns, and community-specific solutions. As emphasised by Oda Kristin Korneliussen in the session: "We're not trying to export a waste management system - we are enabling communities to develop systems that suit their needs."

In addition to the session, the CLOCC team held productive meetings with key stakeholders, including partners from Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation to further strengthen collaboration on sustainable waste management initiatives
