The climb up the corporate ladder has become a "squiggly path," according to a top LinkedIn executive

The climb to the corner office used to happen on a fairly straight ladder.?

Get an entry-level position, work hard, and after a few decades, with a little luck and a lot of privilege, you could make it to the vaunted ranks of the C-suite. But no longer.?

“What’s changing about careers is that they used to be a ladder, and now they are a path,” Aneesh Raman , the chief economic opportunity officer at LinkedIn , tells Fortune ’s Emma Burleigh . “So you’re seeing a bunch of people move around from different functions.”

Depending on how you look at it, that’s really hopeful news: missing out on a single promotion isn’t a death sentence, and a move into a totally different industry can be a genius career move.?

Perhaps most importantly, the stigma around a varied and nonlinear career seems to finally be fading. Around 61% of C-suite leaders have worked at one organization their whole career, according to a new LinkedIn report , which is more than 25 percentage points lower than it was in 2018. And while 57% of executives have only worked in one job function, that’s 30 percentage points lower than it was just a few years ago.?

The skills revolution is here, and it applies to executives as well. When someone finally does make it to the top management tier, their career path, no matter how meandering it may be, is becoming a bonus rather than a liability.???

“The higher up you go, the more adaptability is going to become a required skill, and so the squiggly line just becomes a badge around adaptability,” says Raman.

Leadership Next

Climate change will force almost every industry to move away from dependence on fossil fuels. Automotive is no exception, as EVs are gaining in popularity in certain sections of the United States and across the globe. This week on #LeadershipNext, Diane Brady speaks to Bill Nash, CEO of Carmax, one of the nation’s largest car resellers.

Nash started his career at electronics retailer Circuit City, which was at that time Carmax's parent company. The episode is a wide-ranging conversation about trends in the car industry, the impact of high interest rates on consumers' buying habits, and the Telsa effect on the EV market.

The corporate ladder has been redefined. Nowadays, some people use the elevator to climb to the top faster, and others build their own. ?? I admire those who create their own enterprise, so they avoid climbing anything.

Thank you for the Economic Report on the State of S-Suites and Executives. This is truly a report that is worth trusting as LinkedIn's research on S&P 500 and US-based unicorn companies. In addition to the data on a significant shift in the stereotype of the need for long-term employment relationships in one organization as one of the key conditions for a successful career, it was interesting to learn about the Top 10 Fast-Growing Soft Skills in S-Suites and Executives: 1. Presentations 2. Strategic Thinking 3. Communication 4. Strategic Vision 5. Conflict Resolution/Negotiation 6. Organizational Skills 7. Problem Solving 8. Leadership/Team Management 9. Teamwork 10. Storytelling
