Climate Shockwaves & The Race Against Time
UK for Good
A unique Impact and B Corp Consultancy helping your business grow successfully and sustainably.
At my age, I'm rarely shocked by major events.
More often than not, I've seen a version of them at some point in my life.
But this week barely a day has gone by without a new piece of research which has stopped me in my tracks.
The first shock was reading the words “gobsmackingly bananas” from climate scientist Zeke Hausfather in response to the news that temperatures in September were the highest on record. It’s not the data that’s shocking, it’s the timing.
These events were forecast to occur decades later. Read Zeke’s full report here.
On Friday, I discovered the term: A Minsky Climate Event.
Another new one for me, and the focus of authoritative new research from the Institute of Actuaries which concludes that climate change could destroy 50% of our economies as early as 2070.
Professor Tim Lennon says in his Forward:
“We have left it too late to tackle climate change incrementally. It now requires transformational change and a dramatic acceleration of progress.”
Just let that sink in.
Now you probably agree that actuaries aren't considered people with a proclivity for over-exaggeration.
It's their job to realistically assess risk.
So what does this new research mean for us?
It means that we need to better understand and radically accelerate our action to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
Now.
This is not a time for relaxing our commitments to Net Zero.
The impacts of climate change are being felt decades before climate experts predicted.
It's a time to step up in our businesses, at home, and at play, and act with courage....before it's too late.
As Antonio Guterres says, we need: “everything, everywhere, all at once”

This isn't doomism. It's realism with knobs on.
Have a read here and let me know what you think, how it makes you feel, and what you may do differently for the sake of our children and future generations?
Enjoy the rest of your week,

1 年We have had so many responses to this newsletter from within and beyond the UK for Good community. Thank you all. Today I spoke to an actual actuary (I only personally know one!) about the Minsky Climate Event. He too shared real concerns about the impact on our economies and particularly on the financial sector. Unlike the 2008 financial crisis: a) this has been clearly predicted by the whole environmental and climate science community, and b) we can still (just about) do something to mitigate it. So the simple question is, why aren't we? #timeforchange #betterfuture #betterbusiness #leadership #climateaction
