Washington, DC (November 15, 2024) – Following local elections across the United States and the ongoing conclusion of? mayoral races, Climate Mayors issued the following statement as results roll in:
“We congratulate our member mayors who have been re-elected for another term as they continue to accelerate their commitment to climate progress. These mayors have demonstrated their dedication to climate action in their cities through greenhouse gas emissions reductions, boosting resilience amid extreme weather and natural disasters, fostering more equitable communities, and countless other projects and programs.?
“Of the dozens of Climate Mayors who were up for reelection, nearly all 41 won their respective races or avoided a run-off. We’re thrilled to know that these mayors will continue their impactful climate work amid the changing political landscape at the federal level. Whether it’s Mayor Daniella Levine Cava fighting sea level rise or investing in cutting edge technology to combat the climate crisis in Miami-Dade County or Mayor Kate Gallego protecting residents from extreme heat in Phoenix and reducing energy bills through weatherization upgrades, our mayors will not waver.?
“As the U.S. transitions into a second Trump administration, we are at a critical juncture in our fight against climate change. It is clear that cities and mayors will play a pivotal role in implementing immediate and transformative actions to limit global warming to 1.5°C and protect communities from the impacts of an increasingly warming world. Our members, including our re-elected mayors, are ready to lead the way in implementing ambitious climate action plans that will support a thriving economy, reduce emissions, create jobs, and improve public health – ensuring a sustainable future for our cities. We encourage mayors across the United States and across party lines to join us in solidarity."
