Climate investments, Brookings at UNGA, and more

Welcome to Brookings Insights! This month, we're sharing strategies to fund climate resilience projects, the latest edition of the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, our scholars' activities at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), and more.

Financing equitable climate investments

Trillions of dollars will be needed to reduce America's carbon footprint and protect people and physical assets from an increasingly unstable climate. Who pays and what are the equity considerations to keep in mind?

A new Brookings series explores the barriers to funding climate projects across key sectors— like homes and commercial buildings , transportation , water systems , and energy —and outlines the role financial markets can play.

For more on climate policy, check out the Climate Sense podcast hosted by Samantha Gross. New episodes this season cover hydrogen , nuclear energy , and how to decarbonize the stuff in our lives .

Brookings at UNGA 2024

This month, the 79th session of UNGA was held in New York City. Each year, the gathering provides a high-profile venue for leaders to discuss critical global issues like climate change, education, technology, gender disparities, health care, conflicts, and beyond.

Scholars from our Global Economy and Development program participated in a number of events at UNGA to offer their insights, including one on the 2024 U.S. election and the future of multilateralism .

The Brookings Papers on Economic Activity

The Brookings Papers on Economic Activity (BPEA) is a semi-annual academic conference and journal that pairs rigorous research with real-time policy analysis to address the economic challenges of today and tomorrow. BPEA papers are often cited by leadership and senior staff of the Federal Reserve and Council of Economic Advisers and mentioned in congressional testimony.

In the fall 2024 edition, contributors analyze the effectiveness of sanctions , the Federal Reserve's inflation response , the rising deficit , the economic benefits of clean power , and more.

Asia and the US election

The outcome of the 2024 U.S. election will have a significant impact on America's alliances in Asia. In a new series from our Center for Asia Policy Studies, experts break down what's at stake.

Read Andrew Yeo's introduction and learn about the special U.S. relationship with Australia , where the U.S.-India partnership stands , America’s alliance with Japan , and why the U.S. bond with Taiwan matters .

Addressing AI issues

Brookings experts remain at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) policy discussions. In fact, Chinasa T. Okolo, a fellow in our Center for Technology Innovation, was just named in TIME’s 100 Most Influential People in AI list .

Chinasa’s work focuses on AI governance, AI literacy, the use of AI in health care, and other important aspects of this emerging technology. She recently contributed to the International Scientific Report on the Safety of Advanced AI , highlighting the underrepresentation of non-Western languages and cultures in AI systems.
