Climate Impulse: Inspiring Sustainable Solutions to Advance Humanity

Climate Impulse: Inspiring Sustainable Solutions to Advance Humanity

In our collective quest to preserve our planet, we are faced with a significant challenge: How to inspire and accelerate meaningful change towards a sustainable future when so many skeptical people believe there are no solutions?

Climate action equates in the minds of many as a costly, sacrificial process, rather than an opportunity for positive societal progress. This needs to change. It is crucial to spark new narratives of transformation and infuse hopeful enthusiasm.

We need narratives that not only depict a brighter future but also nourish a collective imagination, shape aspirations, and trigger climate action. Narratives grounded in concrete achievements that are already transforming our societies, demonstrating that ecological transition is not only possible but already underway.?

We need to raise the bar.?Sustainable solutions exist that can be used to achieve the 1.5C Paris Agreement target or contribute to a road to net zero emissions for industrial companies. But to achieve it fully, we need to reach new economies of scale for clean technologies and renewable energy to be able to implement those solutions in carbon intensive industrial operations. That’s where we need an exploration mindset and collective action to make it happen.

From the Wright brothers' first flights on the sandy beaches of North Carolina to the space explorations reaching for the red soil of Mars, the history of aviation is a saga of innovation and progress. Among the most remarkable chapters of this history, Solar Impulse and our round-the-world flight powered only by the energy of the sun pushed the boundaries of imagination in 2016, thereby demonstrating the endless possibilities of renewable energies. That spirit lived on with our long-lasting partnership with the Solar Impulse Foundation through which we demonstrate how chemistry, innovation and future-oriented thinking can help us develop sustainable and profitable solutions that tackle the world’s environmental and health challenges.

Now, with Climate Impulse , which combines the heritage of all these shared experiences, we not only keep this legacy alive but propel it further, demonstrating that concrete solutions can be effectively applied to operate a paradigm shift in aviation, the hydrogen economy and mobility at large. Climate Impulse is a showcase for groundbreaking applications and innovations that will be used in clean mobility. On the ground, those hydrogen storage solutions can also be used in generators, buildings, clean energy applications and beyond.

In 2028, after four years of research and designing, manufacturing, and testing in real conditions, Climate Impulse will take off to fly for the first time non-stop around the world – a nine-day, emission-free, hydrogen-powered flight, piloted by explorers Bertrand Piccard and Rapha?l DINELLI .

To make this human, technological and environmental adventure possible, our elite teams of pioneering explorers will co-innovate in state-of-the art labs to steer every aspect—from material selection to design, build, and validation of the aircraft. Syensqo ’s composite materials will be the backbone, forming the structure of Climate Impulse—fuselage, wings, pods and hydrogen tanks. In the realm of green hydrogen, Syensqo’s innovative solutions will confer exceptionally high-power density and efficiency for Climate Impulse’s record-breaking long haul flight. Additionally, further opportunities to utilize Syensqo’s innovation in specialty polymers and coatings solutions are being explored for other components of the aircraft.

We are convinced that the search for efficient solutions to advance humanity will unite people - citizens, institutions and business leaders. Positive narratives of great adventures with a capital "A" can illuminate the path forward, inspiring new ideas and challenging established conventions. They encourage the exploration of innovative solutions and global collaboration.

One flight, one world, zero emissions—that’s our mission. As storytellers, we have the power to shape the narratives that define our time. As actors of change, we have the responsibility to listen to and amplify the voices that promote positive change. And as architects of a sustainable world, we have the duty to translate these narratives into concrete actions, to make the impossible possible.

Fasten your seatbelt and join us in this incredible new adventure!?

I'm almost sure that Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek is based on Piccard; both are so bold. By the way, Syensqo is also inspiring in these actions.

Do we know how much of renewable power would be needed to convert all the fossil energy used by air transport into “zero carbon H2” ?
