CLIMATE EDUCATION TOOLKIT LAUNCHED, PARTIES ELECTION MANIFESTOS CLOSE, FED SUMMIT DATE CHANGED TO SUPPORT NEW GOVERNMENT

This coming week will see the main political parties release their election manifestos in the UK. Whatever they say, FED is quite clear that the country needs a long-term plan for education, and that education is far to important to become a political football.

Recent research by the?National Foundation for Education Research (NFER) highlights, the top issues for teachers are: reform of the accountability system/Ofsted, addressing the teacher recruitment and retention issues, ensuring sufficient SEND support, and school funding. FED research shows that these issues can only be effectively addressed through long-term planning.

As we prepare to launch the 4th FED National Education Report our unparalleled national consultation has made it clear that we need an education system which has at its heart the principles of accountability, inclusion, collaboration, adaptability and innovation.?

Put simply, the education system cannot plan in the long-term because it was not designed to.?That must change, and FED's work will provide the catalyst for learners, communities and country to reap the benefits.??These proposals will include:

  1. A 10-year Education Planning Framework
  2. A National Council for Education to ensure strong governance
  3. A National Education Assembly for large-scale stakeholder review, inputs and collaboration
  4. A Chief Education Officer as the most senior government adviser on education
