The climate crisis is a living reality

The climate crisis is a living reality

Some people don’t believe the raft is leaking even though our feet are wet. We have no time to convince them.

Instead, we turn to people who are prepared to be part of the solutions. Some need to find the reason for the leakage and stop it. The rest need to pump water like there’s no tomorrow.?

The science is clear, the climate crisis is no longer a distant threat. It a living reality where millions of people are feeling the impacts, every single day. The trajectory is no where near reaching 1.5 degrees - having spent a few days at #COP28, I feel incredibly worried. And incredibly optimistic. At the same time!

Reasons for worry:

  1. We are not fast enough! Climate change is not in a distant future. It already impacting millions of lives. Today. We have breached 6 of 9 planetary boundaries.?
  2. Not enough being done. Fossil fuels remain to be the main cause - we need to go for phase out. Starting now. It is simply too slow.Too little concrete actions, we need policy change that incentivising the green transition. With the global stocktake, gaps will be identified. And impactful climate actions can be taken thereafter.
  3. People, gen z foremost, are losing hope.?We can’t let them - 1.5 is within our reach. Yet we need to double our actions. Today.

At the same time, there are reasons for optimism:?

  1. A majority of people care. Climate matters! Every second year we ask 33.000 people in 30 countries. And you know what, more than 2/3 feel worried, care and take actions. This is similar across all markets, there is a significant increase among younger age groups. We know that a minority prepared to pay. But 80% ready to do more. And wants businesses and Governments to do the same.Sustainability can’t be a luxury for the few. We need all to be winners, to get the scale we need and transform to net-zero by 2050. The planet is our common responsibility.
  2. The transformation has started!?Paris Agreement works, since 2015 when the agreement was made at COP21 in Paris, we have gone from a trajectory of 4 degrees to 2,5-2,9 degrees. The energy revolution is happening! Renewable energy has lower cost than carbon energy and by 2025 1/3 is expected to come from renewables.?The solutions are here! There is an acceleration of solutions out there to support the green transition, let’s accelerate the action and speed up the implementation.
  3. We see more and more leaders are stepping up! Together we are taking our responsibility to lead the way towards a greener and cleaner future. One where our children and grand children can thrive. In the World Economic Forum Alliance of CEO Climate leaders we have 130 companies, H&M Group , 诺维信 , Swiss Re , 沃尔沃汽车 and many many more. Together we are bigger than any country, when it comes to emission. This is a group of deeply committed leader and together we work to reduce 1.0 Gt CO2, which is the size of Japan, ?across scope 1, 2 and 3.

?With this in mind, we need to double our efforts! 2030 is around the corner.?

  • We will not leave this to next generation.?
  • We have the solutions.?
  • We will commit without having all the answers.?
  • We will have the courage to transform.

This is a call for:

Business & Economy 2.0. Being climate smart, is business smart. It is good for business to be a good business.

Collaboration & Leadership 2.0. There are no boarders of the planet. That is the common home we share, let’s treat it with respect and empower radical collaboration.

We have a chance to make history.?

Optimism is a choice.

Thank you for the leadership. I hope that more CEO of large corporations will join the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders. If you together are already as big as Japan BNP, imagine what impact it could have if another few hundred corporations joined and signed up to the pledges made. I am like most people worried about my kids future. Yet, I also know that humans are full of ressiliance especially in the wake of crisis, ie "the capacity to?withstand?or to recover quickly from difficulties". We typically have to get smacked in the face to wake up, but when we do, the capacity to come with solutions is infinite. It would be interesting to also hear your thoughts of how companies can adapt their business to lower consumption patterns that will be necessary. What services and additional values can be created to still grow companies that are not just based on the growth of the physcal products? This is a great dilemma for many consumer goods companies. How to grow sustainably without loosing shareholder value? There is evidence that higher sustainability companies show lower stock market volatility and yield better long term growth. "Being climate smart, is business smart", would love to hear more details on that topic.

Jesper Brodin The science of what we can measure shows a problem.. the the solution will require a new science, a science of living system, the whole story of nature, if you do not account for this, we will destroy our children's future. As Einsten said can not fix a problem at the same level of knowledge that created it

Thank you for highlighting the importance of climate action in your article. I couldn't agree more that we already have effective solutions at our fingertips and one of THE most effective carbon sinks are forests. Recent research underscores this, showing that allowing trees to mature in healthy ecosystems and restoring degraded areas can sequester up to 226 Gt of carbon. This is precisely why at OCELL, we're committed to developing local carbon projects that offer measurable and transparent impact, utilizing cutting-edge technology. While prioritizing carbon avoidance and reduction is crucial and must be the priority, it's clear that our goals are impossible to achieve without significant efforts in carbon removal.

We are definitely not fast enough, but hopefully people realize soon. CEO as role models definitely helps! I love your quote: “Some people don’t believe the raft is leaking even though our feet are wet. We have no time to convince them. Instead, we turn to people who are prepared to be part of the solutions. Some need to find the reason for the leakage and stop it. The rest need to pump water like there’s no tomorrow.?“ I recommend this video from Hans van der Loo about ‘The time is ticking’ in relation to COP28, the need for demand measures and nature based solutions including active cooling: https://youtu.be/4RGTfYlW930?feature=shared
