Climate Conversations: Stories of Communities
In today's rapidly changing world, the impacts of climate change are becoming more apparent and severe, affecting communities across the globe in multifaceted ways. Our recent online session, titled "Climate Conversations: Stories of Communities," held on 28th June, explored the various ways in which climate change is influencing our daily lives, the environment, and different communities.
Our expert speaker, Shatabdi Chakrabarti with over 17 years of experience as a journalist and producer, shared her passion for wildlife, conservation, and indigenous communities through a series of brief videos and photographs. Her storytelling highlighted the critical role of community involvement in conservation efforts and the profound impact of climate change on rural communities. She discussed disrupted farming seasons and migration due to unseasonal rains and water scarcity, initiatives like the Jamui Solar project and community fodder lands demonstrating the integration of local livelihoods with environmental stewardship, and challenges faced by indigenous tribes and pastoral communities, including encroachment on pastoral lands and adaptation struggles of fishing communities. She also emphasized the urgent need for inclusive policies protecting both livelihoods and ecosystems.
Participants shared inspiring personal experiences, such as efforts to communicate sustainability principles to broader communities, supporting organizations in planting 500 saplings near adult education centres to integrate environmental initiatives with educational efforts, and rescuing small birds and caring for stray dogs, illustrating compassion towards local wildlife. The session also highlighted the importance of planting native trees over a target-based approach to tree planting, underscoring the need for thoughtful and context-specific sustainability practices.
A heartfelt thanks to Shatabdi for sharing her invaluable insights and making this a truly participatory session!
