Climate Change Response in Asia and Pacific Held Back by Insufficient Data

Climate Change Response in Asia and Pacific Held Back by Insufficient Data

Asia and the Pacific accounts for more than half of all greenhouse gas emissions and is hit harder by disasters and other climate risks than any other region. Without high-quality data and the ability to analyze it, policymakers in the region can’t design effective measures to address climate change impacts and evaluate their effectiveness.

A new ADB survey published today shows how some national statistical offices don’t have enough staff working on climate data, or a dedicated unit.

Our report outlines how data and statistics can play a crucial role in combating climate change. It shows why it is key for governments to gather and analyze detailed and timely data to help respond to the climate crisis.

Pillars of Progress: ADB’s Contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals

As countries seek to achieve the SDGs, multilateral institutions like ADB play a crucial role, being uniquely positioned to mobilize the resources, expertise, and partnerships needed to drive progress.

At the halfway point to 2030, and against the backdrop of multiple crises stalling progress, our new report reflects on ADB’s contributions since the SDGs were adopted by UN member states in 2015.

With a focus on people, the planet, prosperity, and sustainable infrastructure, the study explores diverse initiatives that have contributed to development and identifies areas that can advance the SDGs across Asia and the Pacific.

ADB to Help Strengthen Resilience of Rural Women in Tajikistan

Tajikistan’s agriculture sector is highly dependent on women’s labor. However, they lack access to practices vital to enhance productivity and cope with the impacts of climate change.

Our new grant will improve women’s agricultural skills and role, increase their employability, and boost the country's food security.

How Pakistan Can Turn Remittances into a Pillar of Economic Growth

Remittances play a key role in Pakistan and act as a buffer during crises and a driver of sustainable growth.

In their recent blog, ADB's Matteo Lanzafame, David Keith De Padua, and Irfan Qureshi discuss how the country can use current inflow to support household welfare and promote long-term economic development.

Shifting to Sustainable Heating in Kazakhstan

Heating is crucial for countries with winter seasons, but coal is often the main heat source. In Kazakhstan, the government has taken a major step towards making its heating systems more sustainable by passing a law that will pave the way for cleaner sources including renewables.

PUBLICATION | ACCESS TO WATER

Paving the Inclusive Path Toward Water for All

Over 500 million people lack access to safe water in Asia and the Pacific, and nearly 1.14 billion people do not have access to sanitation.

This publication shows how adopting a human rights-based approach can help achieve equitable access to water and sanitation to create a healthy environment for all.

Found it very satisfactory that Albert Park noted climate variable rainfall as a data blind spot for for climate and infrastructure policy makers. To that point, the 2023 GFHS Global Model of Green Technology - #RainGridCity - spotlights the #circularrain #technology transition addressing climate variable rainfall with intelligent rainfall retention and reuse networks that offset conventional stormwater infrastructure, and in doing so generates aggregated ecosystem outcome data streams supporting the policy transition to decarbonized civic infrastructure, and building ecosystem outcome credit markets that circular rain technology generates by mitigating extreme and chronic flood and drought through community-based public private partnerships.

This is a critical issue that highlights the need for robust data infrastructure and analytical capabilities. Without accurate and comprehensive climate data, the ability to implement and measure effective climate action remains severely limited. Investing in data collection and analytics is not just a necessity—it's the foundation for sustainable and resilient climate strategies in Asia and the Pacific.
