"Extreme heat is having an extreme impact on people and planet. The world must rise to the challenge of rising temperatures." - From Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations on Thursday, July 25, 2024: " This week the world has experienced the three hottest days on record. But let’s face facts: extreme temperatures are no longer a one day, one week or one month phenomenon. Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere."
Climate Change, Climate Finance, Climate Science, Engineering, Technology and High Risks: Earth is Becoming Hotter and more Dangerous for Everyone.

The UN Secretary-General's Call to Action on Extreme Heat brings together the diverse expertise and perspectives of ten specialized UN entities (FAO, ILO, OCHA, UNDRR, UNEP, UNESCO, UN-Habitat, UNICEF, WHO, WMO) in a first-of-its-kind joint product, underscoring the multi-sectoral impacts of extreme heat.
"Billions of people are facing an extreme heat epidemic. Heat is estimated to kill almost half a million people a year. We know what is driving it: fossil fuel-charged, human-induced climate change. Extreme heat is the new abnormal. But the good news is we can save lives and limit its impact."
" Today we launched a global call to action focused on on:
1)??Caring for the most vulnerable.
2)??Stepping up protections for workers.
3)??Boosting resilience.
4)??Limiting temperature rise and phasing out fossil fuels.

Earth is becoming hotter and more dangerous for everyone, everywhere. To tackle the root cause, countries must phase out fossil fuels – fast and fairly.
Secretary-General's Call to Action on Extreme Heat
?Crippling heat is everywhere. Billions of people around the world are wilting under increasingly severe heatwaves driven largely by a fossil-fuel charged, human-induced climate crisis.?More than 70 per cent of the global workforce ?– 2.4 billion people – are now at high risk of extreme heat. The most vulnerable communities are hit hardest.
In response to the rapid rise in the scale, intensity, frequency and duration of extreme heat, UN Secretary-General António Guterres on 25 July 2024 called for an urgent and concerted effort to enhance international cooperation to address extreme heat in four critical areas:
Caring for the vulnerable - Protecting workers - Boosting resilience of economies and societies using data and science - Limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C by phasing out fossil fuels and scaling up investment in renewable energy.

"Extreme heat?is having an extreme impact on people and planet. The world must rise to the challenge of rising temperatures."
ANTóNIO GUTERRES, United Nations Secretary-General (25 July 2024 )
Climate change is the defining issue of our time….every day we fail to act is a day that we step a little closer towards a fate that none of us wants- a fate that will resonate through generations in the damage done to humankind and life on earth.
Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General
The climate emergency is the biggest economic, social, and environmental threat facing the planet and humanity. Climate-related disasters have almost doubled compared to the previous twenty years. This has exacerbated inequalities within and between countries, with those contributing least to global emissions often experiencing the worst impacts of the climate emergency.
We are at a crossroads. Climate change is undermining the ability to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
It is rewriting the global resource map for assets such as water, arable land and energy while driving migration, displacement, and instability. Transitioning to a sustainable net-zero carbon world requires rapid systems-level changes, including in key sectors such as energy, food, and health.
Collective action, political leadership, and financing are needed to keep the global average temperature within the 1.5 degrees safer limit outlined in the Paris Agreement. However, prudent risk management requires preparation for a range of negative outcomes associated with varying degrees of warming and to effectively manage unexpected concurrent threats, such as the current COVID-19 crisis.
