Climate Change and the Dying Western Redcedar trees

For several decades ecologists have suggested that Western redcedar would act as the "canary in the coal mine" when it came to climate change or global warming as it was then. Widespread die off of the redcedars would be seen as a positive indication of altered weather patterns, it was suggested. In the southern part of coastal British Columbia the effect is now obvious everywhere. Dead and dying redcedars trees, dead hedges, and very stressed redcedar trees with dead tops and very unhealthy lower crowns. The public has started to notice and ask questions. It is not a plant I recommend for new urban forest planting schemes as it has little chance of survival in a drought stressed environment.

We found bark beetle galleries (Phloeosinus spp) in dead Thujas throughout Vancouver.? Some of these trees were in wet areas as well.? Predisposed by drought and smoke yes, but this insect is becoming prevalent regardless of growing conditions.?
