Similarly, when it comes to climate change, it's not just the change itself but the rate at which it occurs that matters.
The Denial of Climate Change Many dismiss climate change by pointing to natural fluctuations in temperature and CO2 levels in the past.
Past vs. Present: A Comparison
Rate of Change: In historical ice core data, CO2 concentrations rose by approximately 100 ppm over thousands of years at the end of an ice age. In contrast, today’s CO2 levels have surged by over 100 ppm in just over a century—a stark acceleration.
Temperature: Temperature shifts followed a similar gradual pattern in the past. However, over the last century, global temperatures have increased by about 1°C—an unprecedented rate when compared to the gradual changes seen in historical data.
It’s the speed, the second derivative, that makes today’s climate change dangerous.
