A Climate change Diary: Delhi Heatwave Hell

Image 1: Open burning in Najafgarh, New Delhi India - In the world's most polluted city: How long it takes to take action to stop Climate Change?

It's been 1.5 years since I moved to New Delhi. It has been considered one of the most polluted cities in the world for the past 10 years.

Today it was 42°C! Even now, at 11:30 pm, it's still 35°C. ??

However, it is surprising to see people still openly burning across the streets, dumping waste into water bodies and onto the land.

Before coming here, I couldn't imagine the gravity of Climate Change. I come from Rwanda, and we just experience normal average temperatures throughout the year, except for heavy rains that sometimes cause flooding, similar to here.

Climate change affects people, animals, plants and all living things. Its impacts are intolerable, and the more we neglect it, the more we face its worsening effects.

Did you know: In Delhi, temperatures sometimes reach 50°C and beyond!

This is a hazard in human history, and that is why people need to be more aware of climate change than ever before.

While in summer, the people of Delhi pray to Lord Brahma to save them from increasing temperatures, ?? these prayers never cease. The same catastrophe continues during winter, as cold temperatures sometimes fall below 0°C. Last winter, the persisting air pollution caused a smog that covered the entire village of Najafgarh.

Climate Change Awareness is Highly needed in Delhi

Climate change is very prominent in Delhi, and people need no more facts, but awareness of adaptive measures.

  • Most Delhiites acknowledge climate change but lack motivation to make a difference.

  • There's a lack of understanding about individual actions and their impact.

  • The government is seen as responsible for finding solutions.

Is it possible to Survive in Delhi's Environmental Crisis?

Summer is unapologetic in Delhi, which is why the citizens at least need to:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Limit outdoor activities: Avoid being outside during peak heat hours.
  • Wear protective clothing: Use hats, sunglasses, and masks to protect yourself from the sun and pollution.
  • Invest in air purifiers: Improve indoor air quality.
  • Educate yourself and others: Learn about climate change and share your knowledge.
  • Afforestation: Stop burning and cutting down trees, and plant more trees.

These are a few tips to survive the harsh Delhi summer. More research is needed to reduce the adversity of climate change and advance Delhi towards a green and sustainable city.
