Today I am going to speak about something that affects every species on this planet
"Imagine a world where our very existence is threatened by forces beyond our control. This is the reality we face today – the reality of climate change."
?
Problem Definition:
The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius) since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere and other human activities.
Do you know the world that we are living in will have increased in the temperate by 1.5 degrees within the next 35 years?
As 1.5 Degrees Looms, Scientists See Growing Risk of Runaway Warming, Urgent Need to Slash Emissions. As the planet rapidly approaches 1.5 degrees C of warming, scientists warn that rising temperatures are?degrading the Earth's ability to soak up carbon dioxide, threatening to further exacerbate climate change. The experts warn that rising temperatures are degrading the Earth's ability to soak up carbon dioxide, threatening to further exacerbate climate change.
?
Cause:
The primary cause of climate change is human activities – like driving cars, creating electricity, and cutting down forests – not natural changes in the climate. These human activities release gases into the atmosphere called greenhouse gases, which slowly warm the planet, creating climate change.
?
According to NCEI's statistical analysis and data through October,?there is a greater than 99% chance that 2023 will rank as the warmest year on record. January–October in the Northern Hemisphere ranked warmest on record at 1.44°C (2.59°F) above average.
?
Consequences:
·?????? Climate change could be irreversible by 2030
·?????? Greenhouse gas levels are at an all-time high
·?????? More than 1 million species face extinction
·?????? Climate change is creating a refugee crisis
·?????? Our oceans are dying
·?????? We use more of the earth's resources than it can renew
?
The consequences of climate change now include, among others,?intense droughts, water scarcity, severe fires, rising sea levels, flooding, melting polar ice, catastrophic storms and declining biodiversity.
?
More frequent and intense drought, storms, heat waves, rising sea levels, melting glaciers and warming oceans can directly harm animals, destroy the places they live, and wreak havoc on people's livelihoods and communities. As climate change worsens, dangerous weather events are becoming more frequent or severe.

Solution
This problem is massive hence requires a structured framework to resolve. Here comes the ESG
ESG in the context of climate change refers to environmentally sustainable practices undertaken by companies in order to mitigate their negative environmental impact while continuing to make a profit.
“It provides a structured framework for assessing companies' climate-related commitments and actions, enabling investors to make informed decisions on whether companies are actually aligned with Paris Agreement ambitions, and to engage with companies to drive positive change.”

In Singapore – the ministry of Sustainability and Environment has taken measure to make Singapore follow Sustainable practices by the year 2030.
Climate changes is a massive problem, cannot be solved by one country it required global cooperation amongst all the nations. Let’s put an emphasis on what we can do as individuals.
Here are 10 easy ways to reduce waste as an individual:

If left unchecked, climate change will cause average global temperatures to increase beyond 3°C and will adversely affect every ecosystem. Already, we are seeing how?climate change can exacerbate storms and disasters, and threats such as food and water scarcity, which can lead to conflict
The world that we are living in in the state of crisis due to climate change and increase in the Green House Gas emissions. This calls for serious actions on behalf, individuals, Governments and Society that we live in. If not acted now, consequences will be dire state. The beautiful planet that we found, we will not leave in the same state for our generation and our future generation will not appreciate us because we didn’t act enough when we could mitigate this huge risk.
So, folks the time is now for us to act in every possible way to save the planet and leave it better than we found for our future generations.
In conclusion, climate change is a defining challenge of our time. The choices we make today will determine the world we leave for future generations. It's time for bold action, innovative solutions, and a commitment to a sustainable future."
Let us all be stewards of this planet. Make sustainable choices in your daily life, support policies that prioritize the environment, and be a voice for change. Together, we can create a world that is resilient, equitable, and sustainable for all."
With those thoughts, I would like to thank you for your attention, and I appreciate your time. Thanks.
If one is going to advocate for personal CONSUMPTION action that can contribute to moving the needle, then it could make sense to look at the main sources of greenhouse gases from personal consumption. Food: cancel or reduce red meat intake (you are probably consuming too much for your own good anyway), cancel or reduce milk-based products, reduce overall amount of animal proteins. Transportation: use public transportation, if you are part of the flying elite (only about a tenth of the world population flies and frequent fliers represent 1% of the world population and are responsible for half the emissions from air travel), then limit this flying as much as you can. Building: the Singapore electric grid is 95% natgas powered and thus highly carbon intensive, cut down on A/C and set the A/C at 25C or higher if you can (I am not saying it is ok to waste green electricity). Purchases: before you RRR, AVOID, but RRR indeed. If you are in a position to donate all the SAVINGS from the above (or more!), you may choose to direct these donations towards projects that will reduce emissions or develop carbon sinks. POLITICAL ACTION however is the key lever for decarbonising this world.

7 个月Thanks, Umesh. Agree and would add : regularly clean-up your cloud based folders, e-mails, files, as digital carbon footprint is also impactful, prefer public transportation, reduce aircon, buy second-hand items as much as possible... ;-)

8 个月Indeed, taking action now rather than later is crucial. It's an interesting note and observation particularly when we are experiencing with the unprecedented heat in Singapore for last few days. Climate change continues to present significant challenges globally, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures to mitigate its impact. Stay cool and safe during this heatwave!
