The Climate of Business #9: Job of the year? In Climate.

Over the course of the last year my team in Plan A expanded significantly. 3 offices and 30+ nationalities across Europe and we are nowhere done. The best thing about it? We are not alone. The climate tech industry has exploded and is able to take in more talent, thanks to the $14.2 billion funding in Q1/Q2 2021 worldwide. Conveniently, these are the jobs that the next generations seek (see below). The Gen Zs are looking for a company to join which connects them to a purpose, cares about climate and its people.

Where does this leave you? If this equation is successful, not only Greentech companies would be enticing for the next generations. You don't need to build a Greentech company to get this talent - you simply need to satisfy their need for a purpose-driven work environment with equal care about people, planet, profit. Or simply a transparent approach on your path to get there.

Reality Check

Last week I promised I will speak about reporting standards, but the response I got from many of you overwhelmingly demonstrated that this is a topic that cannot be covered simply in a few paragraphs. Rather than lending superficial knowledge on the topic, I will share some useful resources which help you develop a comprehensive idea on the standards.

EU Taxonomy

One key standard many speak about these days is the EU Taxonomy. We at Plan A put together a practical guide on how you can navigate this new EU framework.

The EU Taxonomy is a green classification system that translates the EU’s climate and environmental objectives into criteria for specific economic activities for investment purposes.?- EU

The Taxonomy Regulation lays out six EU environmental objectives:

  • climate change mitigation
  • climate change adaptation
  • sustainable use and protection of water and marine resources
  • transition to a circular economy
  • pollution prevention and control
  • protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems.

How will companies use the EU Taxonomy?

Mandatory reporting for large financial and non-financial companies, financial market participants. Voluntary for those who want to be guided on how to go through a sustainable transition.

What is the role of the EU Taxonomy?

The framework is really elaborate and has been further developed over the course of the last months. It is one of the statement pieces of legislation that came out of the Green Deal and is likely to expand in its reach to industries and organisations that at the moment don't fall within the mandatory group. It is there to set out of a framework for alignment in the sustainable transition.

Where can you learn more?

The Plan A's practical guide on the EU Taxonomy and the 17-page FAQ of the EU.

Next week I will focus on the financing of Greentech. PM me with inputs if you wish.

Clarity in climate is the new challenge. There are many moving parts, and companies can use our guidance to adjust and adapt their systems and community influence. While I am proud to dedicate my experience to build understanding, strategy and narrative, it is people like you and Plan A that continue to lead the way to action. Thank you for being such an important part of this fight for our people-planet-profit, and for your constant inspiration! ??
