Clients are everywhere

Hey lovely,
Last week, I went to the dentist…
Thrilling content right here, I know. But stay with me—I promise there’s a point to this.
It reminded me that clients really are everywhere.
Even when you’re in a situation where you’ve literally got someone’s hand in your mouth and can’t talk much, opportunities can still arise.
Now, I have to admit, I wasn’t feeling particularly cheerful going in. As you might have read, I was feeling pretty exhausted and flat last week. Ending with a dentist visit—definitely not anyone’s idea of fun—wasn’t the most fabulous way to wrap up the week. But life admin waits for no one.
To top it off, they were running 20 minutes late and didn’t bother to tell me. Needless to say, my mood wasn’t exactly improving.
So, of course, I end up with the most chipper, sweet, and engaging hygienist imaginable. That woman was working her tail off to be kind, outgoing, and comforting. I humored her but wasn’t giving much in return. And soon after starting, I couldn’t exactly chat back since my mouth was otherwise occupied.
But she kept at it, sparking up conversation and staying cheerful.
Somehow, she mentioned having a holiday coming up. And then, with a sparkle in her voice, she added, “I’ll be going to Sri Lanka in two weeks.”
I said, “I’ve just been there! Where are you going?”
She replied, “Honestly, I’m a bit stressed about it—we haven’t made many plans yet.”
“Well, that’s handy,” I said. “I’m actually the partner of a travel company specialising in South Asia. I was just there hosting a retreat we planned through them.”
In between the scraping, scrubbing, and spitting (delightful, right?), I managed to share bursts of information, and she was thrilled to have stumbled upon this conversation.
While having my fluoride treatment, I mimed for a “pen,” and she handed me a Post-it note and pen so I could scribble down our contact details.
From a bad mood and barely lifting a finger during my rest week to a potential client right there in the dentist’s chair. Who would have thought?
Ah, rest and receive—you’ve done it again.
This was exactly the reminder I needed that our clients, work, and income opportunities are truly everywhere. If you’re open, listening (which I was quite literally forced to do with my mouth full!), and willing to share, you can meet new clients in the most unexpected places.
I walked out of there smiling, uplifted, and hopeful. She was, hands down, the best hygienist I’ve ever had—turning a usually unpleasant experience into a surprisingly charming one.
Lesson:
So, where might you be missing out on opportunities because you’re not being open, curious, or engaging when prompted?
I hope this inspires you to strike up conversations in weird and wonderful places. And please, write back and let me know—what’s the strangest place you’ve ever met a potential client?
Have a lovely day, Emma x
