Client Relationships: How To Be A Freelancing Force Of Nature

Client Relationships: How To Be A Freelancing Force Of Nature

Let's face it: the internet is overflowing with freelance fluff. Sugar-coated digital nomad articles promising you'll be "living the dream on a beach with a mai tai in one hand and a laptop in the other" while you "work whenever you want!"??

Yeah, right.?

The reality of freelancing is more like juggling flaming chainsaws while blindfolded on a tightrope over a pit of hungry crocodiles and then having a mai tai on a beach afterwards.?

But here's the good news: with the right approach, you can not only survive the freelance world but thrive.??

The key? Client relationships.

These aren't your office buddies you gossip with in the staff kitchen whilst getting coffee. These people put food on your table and pay for those mai tai’s and chilled beach days.?

So, how do you avoid client communication car crashes and build relationships that keep the work (and money) flowing?

Here's the unfiltered truth you won't find in those sunshine-and-rainbows blog posts:

Stop Underselling Yourself:?

You're a skilled professional, not a bargain bin special. Charge your worth, and don't be afraid to walk away from lowball offers. Clients who value quality will pay for it. (And those who don't? See ya later.) *enjoy saying no to people who think they can get a discount on your time.?

Underpromise, Overdeliver:?

Set realistic expectations upfront, then blow them out of the water with your work. This builds trust and makes clients raving fans who sing your praises from the mountaintops (or at least leave you glowing testimonials).

Communication is King (or Queen, Depending on Your Preference):?

Keep clients in the loop, even if it's terrible news. Don't be that freelancer who disappears into a radio silence black hole for weeks on end. Quick updates, even if they're just to say, "Hey, I'm still here and crushing it on your project," go a long way.

Boundaries are Beautiful:?

Just because you're freelance doesn't mean you're available 24/7. Set precise working hours and stick to them. Respect your time, and your clients will respect it, too. (Unless they're one of those nightmare clients who emails you at 2 a.m., then politely remind them of those boundaries.)

Fire Bad Clients (Yes, You Can Do That):?

Not all clients are created equal. If someone's constantly micromanaging, nitpicking, or being rude, cut the cord. Your sanity and your business will thank you for it and then you can get to work with a different client that better aligns with your sensibilities.

I say it in almost every article: Freelancing isn't for the faint of heart, but if you follow the above ideas with a client-centric approach that doesn't involve selling your soul, you can build a profitable and fulfilling career.??

So, ditch the fluffy advice, embrace the real talk, and become a freelance force to be reckoned with.?
