Client Advisory: Hurricane Alert

Hurricane Beryl, currently a Category 5 storm with sustained wind speeds over 150 mph, is traveling west-northwest at 19 knots (~22 mph) through the central and northwestern Caribbean. At this time, forecast models are uncertain of the specific track and intensity of Beryl after 72 hours. Current tracks show the hurricane could make landfall anywhere from Mexico to Louisiana with most consensus focused on Southern Texas. Earliest expected Tropical Storm force winds could reach Southern Texas by Friday, evening, July 5th.

Due to the uncertainty in the hurricane’s track and the long holiday weekend, those in the Gulf States should monitor the forecasts closely, pay attention to local emergency advisories and start preparing accordingly. If your business / building will be closed in observation of the holiday, you should ensure the building is secured and prepared for high winds and heavy rains / flash flooding.

Recommended key steps to take before the storm arrives:

  • Activate your severe weather emergency action plan
  • Clear storm and roof drains of debris
  • Check roof condition and make any necessary last minute repairs
  • Bring in or secure outdoor furniture, signage, planters, and other unsecured items
  • Ensure emergency generators have fuel and are serviced
  • Gather and install sandbags or flood protection materials
  • Check emergency supplies and replenish any which may be missing or needed
  • Gather important documents
  • Monitor the storm and follow local authorities' guidance on evacuation
