CLICKBAIT: Govt warns citizens about smishing scam

Be on high alert if you've recently received an SMS urging immediate action –take a moment to think twice before you respond. In a bid to safeguard citizens from the ever-present dangers of cyber deceit, the #government's cybersecurity awareness division, known as #CyberDost, has raised a red flag concerning the increasingly dangerous 'smishing' scam. This term is a blend of 'SMS' (Short Message Service) and 'phishing,' which refers to the deceitful tactic of tricking individuals into revealing confidential information.

#Crafty cybercriminals orchestrate this ploy by sending deceptive text messages, capitalizing on the trust of unsuspecting victims. This form of phishing often employs malicious software or fraudulent websites to create a false sense of urgency, compelling recipients to click on suspicious links. These links might promise to reschedule a delivery, offer a chance to claim government refunds, or even warn about service disruptions unless immediate payment is made. Regrettably, these are just a few examples of the types of fraud being perpetrated, raising concerns for users of both #Android and #iPhone devices.

Maintaining a high level of vigilance is paramount before engaging with any links. There are a few telltale signs to help identify a fraudulent SMS: the presence of clickable links, glaring spelling errors, unexpected requests for banking or security information via text.

If you find yourself falling victim to the Smishing Scam, act promptly. You can contact 1930 to report instances of online financial fraud and report cybercrimes at cybercrime.gov.in . Swiftly inform your bank and freeze your credit card. Update all passwords and PINs as soon as possible, and carefully monitor your accounts, credit reports, and any unusual login activities.

Stay informed and stay safe – don't let cyber criminals catch you off guard.
