?Clerkenwell Modern Roof Garden: Nature | Wildlife | Biodiversity | Sustainability | Edibility ?
Biodiversity Effect
Our 1st biodiverse roof garden in July 2014 was driven by 2 paramount elements: the sheer lack of trees or plants in the street below, and the clients’ appreciation of nature spending much time in their large countryside garden.
More from this case study on our website:
Greenless Clerkenwell Street
Snug above the busy intersection of Goswell Road & Old Street in Clerkenwell EC1, the roof terrace turned natural roof garden is vastly oblong, its footprint spans a 20-metre length and 3 metre depth. We designed 2 further roof gardens here, with a sister rooftop on the top level of this penthouse apartment and a bedroom shaded balcony.
Distinct Biodiverse Zones
To alleviate the narrow rectangularity, we created 3 discrete zones with surface changes from hardwood to sandstone and grass. Each area features its own distinct planting design: the deck hosts shrubs, the stone indulges herbs and the grass exhibits native trees.
Nectar-rich Roof Garden
With 70 unique species, many plants are native, while spread over 60 sqm, biodiversity is truly extravagant in this city roof garden. The photos by Marianne Majerus were taken 3 months after planting in September, showing busy pollinator activity, with hundreds of bees benefiting from the pollen and nectar-rich roof garden.

Fruit & Veg Roof Garden
The upper roof terrace features a custom viewing steel podium, designed to survey the up-close vistas of iconic landmarks such as the Barbican, Old Bailey, Shard & St Paul’s. This rooftop is mainly a fruit & veg garden, where a Grapevine, Apple, Fig, Rhubarb and Lemon are enjoyed.
Sprawling Herb Garden
Viewed via a floor-to-ceiling glass elevation of an open-plan kitchen, the roof garden forms an intrinsic part of our clients’ city lifestyle, producing plethoric flower power in a long blooming March-November. This indoor-outdoor merger elevates the focus of the central herb garden cascading with Thyme, Chamomile, Oregano & Rosemary.
