Cleats vs. Angle Brackets: Which is the Best Choice for Install?

When it comes to installing shelves in your home, there are multiple ways to secure them, but two of the most common methods are using cleats or angle brackets. Both options have their advantages and are suited for different applications, but which one is right for your project? Let’s break down the pros and cons of each method to help you make an informed decision.

What Are Cleats?

A cleat system consists of a horizontal strip of wood (or metal) mounted to the wall, onto which the shelf is secured. This method distributes weight across a larger surface area, providing excellent stability.

Pros of Using Cleats:

  • Superior Weight Support: Because the weight is spread across a wider surface, cleats can handle heavier loads, making them ideal for bookshelves, pantry shelving, and garage storage.
  • Clean and Seamless Look: Cleats are often hidden underneath or behind the shelf, creating a floating shelf effect for a sleek, modern aesthetic.
  • Stronger Structural Integrity: When properly anchored, cleats provide a firm and durable shelf support system.
  • Customizable Fit: Cleats can be tailored to fit specific shelf sizes and varying wall conditions.

Cons of Using Cleats:

  • More Labor-Intensive Installation: Installing cleats requires more precise measurements, cutting, and wall anchoring compared to angle brackets. Therefore, installing cleats for shelving will cost more money for the customer (or, home owner), in most cases.
  • Permanent Installation: Removing cleats can damage the wall, making them less ideal for temporary shelving solutions.

What Are Angle Brackets?

Angle brackets (which are also commonly called L-brackets) are metal supports that attach directly to both the wall and the underside of the shelf, holding it securely in place.

Pros of Using Angle Brackets:

  • Easy Installation: Brackets are simple to install with minimal tools and expertise, making them a great option for DIYers.
  • Adjustable and Removable: If you need to move or replace your shelves, angle brackets can be easily detached without extensive wall damage. However, I must state that you should take that statement with a grain of salt because, depending on the quantity of angle brackets used, you could easily end up with a bunch of unsightly holes in your wall if you choose to move them after the first installation.?
  • Wide Availability: Brackets come in various sizes, styles, and finishes, offering both decorative and functional choices.
  • Visible Hardware: Brackets are very visible, so in many cases, many people find them attractive and stylish, depending on their design, of course. Many bracket products are plain, ugly, and industrial looking, but many brackets products found on the markets have the ability to elevate the design of peoples' homes.?

Cons of Using Angle Brackets:

  • Visible Hardware: Unlike cleats, brackets are exposed, which may not be desirable for a clean or modern design. This statement obviously contradicts the very last "pro" point made above, but since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, one must decide for themselves what they like. You might love your Victorian-era styled brackets on your living room shelves, but there is a high possibility that your guest think otherwise, so if you are leaning toward brackets, it's a great idea to proceed with caution.?
  • Potential for Less Stability: If not properly anchored during installation, there is a high chance that angle brackets may not support as much weight as cleats.?
  • Limited Customization: Since brackets come in pre-set sizes and styles, they may not fit all shelving needs as precisely as cleats.

Which Should You Choose?

The choice between cleats and angle brackets depends on your specific needs:

  • Choose Cleats If: You’re looking for a sturdy, seamless installation for heavy-duty storage or want a sleek, floating shelf appearance.
  • Choose Angle Brackets If: You prefer a quick and adjustable installation that allows for easy modifications or a more decorative look.

Both options provide reliable support for shelves when installed correctly. Understanding your shelving requirements, weight capacity needs, and aesthetic preferences will guide you toward the best solution for your home.
