Helping companies integrate and innovate with AI technology more effectively, safely, and profitably
The Christmas season is upon us, and we're all staggering towards the finishing line, crumpled paper crown on head and eggnog in hand - yet the big Gen AI news doesn’t stop.?
Google Gemini launches to excitement then scepticism?
For a moment last week the launch of Google’s new Gen AI model, Gemini, looked like a bit of a triumph. As, or more, capable than GPT 4 on many standard benchmarks it looked like Google had caught up with Open AI, and then some. But, soon after it launched people started asking questions about some of the demo videos which it turns out weren’t all they seemed, and there were also questions about the benchmarking, too. Ultimately, Gemini is probably going to get Google to a competitive place, but given they’re a company built on marketing dollars, they seem pretty clueless about marketing their own product. Didn't anyone there think that there might be a lot of pretty clued up people scrutinising the stuff they released?
Mistral?launches its new model with zero fanfare
While the AI world was chewing over the Google news, Mistral, a French model developer dropped their large language model on Twitter / X - just a link, no commentary or dodgy videos. I’m not saying that this is the right way to go about things, but it is certainly something of a contrast to the Google approach. And this latest Mistral model is a big deal, because it’s the first open source model based on the Mixture of Experts approach used in GPT4; and it’s more powerful than GPT 3.5. This means there’s a free, highly performant model that anyone can download and use. And there's more, because Mistral has no safety guardrails, unlike Open AI, Google, etc, which will stop you making all sorts of nefarious content. Something sure to make the regulators sit up and take note.

EU AI Act text agreed
Talking of which...on Friday the EU agreed a text of the forthcoming EU regulation on AI. It hasn’t been published as yet, but it shares much with the April 2021 proposal and there are some pointers in press releases, etc. There has been some significant political pushback against the bill, with several prominent EU politicians, including Emmanuel Macron (who explicitly mentioned Mistral), saying that it is too restrictive and will hamper European businesses' ability to compete with the US and China.
A good summary of what the law will cover here:

1 年The irony here is the open and free model of mistral will bypass most regulations except where it’s really risky…..
