Cleared for Takeoff
Hi network. Hope you're well.
A few weeks ago, I launched the War Stories newsletter, with the goal of advancing ideas on leadership in organizations through storytelling.
In those few weeks, a dozen posts have gathered nearly 10k reads, almost 500 reactions/comments, and 1000 subscribers. To employ some typically British understatement, that's a decent start.
But ... the pilot in me wants to go further, higher, and faster than might seem reasonable to others. And the Amazonian in me wants to keep growing, expanding, and reaching into new minds to exert more influence, and to do so at pace.
So my ask is that if you are enjoying the newsletter so far (and btw, a huge thanks for reading my words and to those who have given me great feedback), please do two things.
1. Share this post & the newsletter w/ your network.
2. When you enjoy an individual post, react and share, adding your thoughts.

More engagement, more reach, an ever-growing conversation ... these are my unapologetic goals.
My time as an Amazonian is soon drawing to a close, and I am gradually turning the page into a new chapter. I don't know what that looks like yet. But almost certainly it will involve writing, speaking, researching, and teaching on the subjects of leadership, operations, and organizations. Your encouragement and participation can turbo-charge that transition. Your ideas and reactions are gold dust to me!
I've had an exceptional professional journey because of leaders who set superior examples for me, invested in my growth, and helped me see the difference leadership makes in the work experience, success, and lives of people and teams. My greatest source of fulfilment has been paying that forward by building others up and watching them achieve more than they thought possible.

I want a larger and richer conversation about how leadership is the antidote to work misery, the kryptonite against mediocrity, and our most eternally renewable source of organizational energy. A conversation where we learn from stories, the experiences of others, from one another. And that learning flows into organizations as a better work experience for legions of those who create the value that makes the world go round.
This is how that conversation starts ... with a modest exchange of ideas carrying the hope of mutual influence.
Thanks to you all, and stay restless.

1 年"A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment??" Eccl 2:24, 25 Do you help others in this quest? Do you adequately prepare them, challenge without daunting, allow them to bask in the glow of success, console and refit when they fall short? These can all be done without being the person marking the trail - so I don't think 'leadership' is the term you seek.

1 年“I want a larger and richer conversation about how leadership is the antidote to work misery, the kryptonite against mediocrity, and our most eternally renewable source of organizational energy.” I am not sure I have this kind of energy even having been described as an inspirational leader in terms of style. I don’t know that in any short order I can make the mediocre exceptional. I prefer to start with surrounding myself with excellence. Just as actual energy is neither created or destroyed, maintaining organizational energy requires everyone on my team. Sorry to say but the question itself sounds very “single seat.” Never seen anyone do what you are asking … have met a few who imagined it to be so though. After leaving the military where peers and subordinates no longer face threats of UCMJ, consensus building, peer leadership, and active listening are what make leaders successful. Cults of personality tend to have have huge swings in profitability and create toxic work environments. Think Elon Musk or again sorry to say but every retiree I know who ever worked for Amazon who hated it there. If the divide between labor and management leads to fights over unionization it’s the opposite of stable, flat, or consensus.
