With the approval of this groundbreaking project, Gloucestershire College's new ￡5 million construction training centre is set to become a beacon for those seeking essential construction skills. Currently, Cheltenham residents in pursuit of such training often have to travel to Gloucester or beyond. This new centre, located at the Cheltenham campus, aims to change that by bringing top-notch construction education closer to home.

The region's demand for construction workers is on the rise, projected to reach a staggering 6,400 annually by 2025. To address this demand and equip the construction workers of the future with cutting-edge skills, Gloucestershire College's new training centre will focus on techniques aligned with the industry's shift towards net-zero carbon. As the college itself strives for carbon neutrality, it's setting an inspiring example by incorporating green technologies such as ground-source heat pumps and extensive solar panels on the building's roof.

The college's 7,000-square-foot sustainable construction centre, designed to facilitate training for 164 learners per week across various skills, has received support from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Post-16 Capacity Fund. This financial backing underscores the importance of this project in meeting the region's workforce needs while championing sustainability.

The facility will feature 13 plumbing bays, 21 electrical bays, and 21 bays for brickwork, groundwork, and carpentry, along with four classrooms. Beard Construction, known for their extensive experience in building educational structures for the past 130 years, will lead the construction efforts. Their commitment to sustainability aligns perfectly with the college's vision, ensuring that this new centre adheres to a collaborative and sustainable ethos while minimising disruption to other college activities.

Principal Matthew Burgess expressed the college's enthusiasm for the project, stating, "Our selection of Beard Construction is rooted in its exceptional reputation and demonstrated commitment to sustainable and high-quality builds. We sought a partner who shared our vision of preparing the talent of tomorrow for the evolving construction landscape."

Alex Chalk, MP for Cheltenham, recently visited the site to discuss plans and opportunities. He emphasised the importance of this centre, not only in delivering a skilled workforce for vital projects but also in creating opportunities for talented young individuals. He said, "This exciting new state-of-the-art construction skills centre... will also create exciting opportunities, allowing young people of skill and determination to go as far as their talents can take them."
