Cleaning a negative pressure unit (NPU), best practices
Beacon International Limited
Beacon manufacture, service and supply equipment and products to the asbestos removal and construction industry.
Final decontamination is the deep cleaning and service of equipment that needs to be carried out on equipment such as negative pressure units (NPU). This is a legal requirement and should be done every 6 months by a specialised company. It is important to note though if your asbestos plant has high usage levels, it may be recommended that you do this more frequently. This is important to ensure that the equipment maintains optimum performance levels and is free from damage and safe to use.
At the end of a project or before an NPU is delivered or collected by the servicing company, routine cleaning should be carried out.
What is routine cleaning of a negative pressure unit?
At the end of a project or at the point a negative pressure unit (NPU) is going in for a full service and decontamination, it must be cleaned down first. This means the pre-filter should be removed and bagged, a transit plate attached, and a fresh pre-filter inserted. This protects the HEPA filter and helps prevent particles from escaping and risking secondary exposure. The HEPA filter should only be removed in a controlled environment by the specialised company carrying out the service and decontamination.
These processes are in place to reduce the potential spread of hazardous particles outside an enclosure which increases the risk of secondary exposure to the wider team on site.
