I still often eat all the food on my plate. Why? Because food was scarce in World War 2 Europe.
No, I wasn’t alive then, and WWII was already part of the history books by the time I was growing up. But it was part of my grandparents’ lives and the very real struggles became a core part of their identity. It influenced how they raised my parents and as a result, how I was raised. Although I did not face a world where food was hard to find – quite the contrary, food was cheap and served in large portions – the memories of hard times were still alive and influencing our society.
Now that we are four to five generations beyond those who remember WWII and the years which followed, the influence has waned. The values and work ethic Gen X inherited from our grandparents were not passed down for two more generations. Instead, new views on why people work, how we interact, how power is given (or taken) have emerged. Some valuable lessons have been lost along the way, but so too have bad ideas, bad practices, and worse. The net change has been positive (in my opinion), as many of the lessons learned in the last century are downright unhealthy for our bodies, minds, and society.
As with all changes, it does so as the pendulum swings. The wars of the last century pulled strongly in one direction. The tense peace which led into this one pulled it another. Where it heads from here, we can only speculate from our armchairs or influence from the halls of our workplaces, schools, and governments.
If you’re a leader of people (whether through work or not), you should not do so from the sidelines. Are there lessons lost you wish were found again? Share them and the wisdom upon which they were founded. Is there still harm caused by old views of the world? Don’t perpetuate them out of habit. Recognize, as a leader, you are a critical influencer of where things can go. And recognize your own views and practices can and should change and always be getting better.
We need not be trapped by the practices of the past. But we should understand why they were the practices then, and if there is a kernel of good, then not forget it. And if there is no kernel of goodness to it, stamp it out of practice, and leave it for the history books.
