Clean Hajj Initiative

The blessed journey of the annual Hajj pilgrimage for 2024 has commenced, with those who meet the Hajj criteria—being Muslim, in good health, and able to afford it—gathering in the sacred city of Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

Performing Hajj is a core aspect of Islam, considered one of the Five Pillars. However, undertaking the pilgrimage is contingent on certain conditions being met. Here's who is permissible to go on Hajj according to Islam:

  • Muslim Adults: Only adult Muslims, both men and women, are obligated to perform Hajj. This means reaching the age of maturity as defined by Islamic law.
  • Physical and Financial Capacity: The pilgrim must be physically and financially capable of undertaking the journey. This includes having good health to endure the pilgrimage rituals and the financial means to cover the expenses of travel, accommodation, and provisions for themselves and any dependents they leave behind.
  • Mental Fitness: Soundness of mind is also a requirement. Individuals with mental incapacity are exempt from the obligation.
  • Freedom: Hajj is obligatory only for free Muslims, not slaves.

There are some additional considerations:

  • Debt: Ideally, one should be free of debt before performing Hajj, but there may be exceptions depending on the specific circumstances.
  • Optional for Non-Adults and Others: While not obligatory, children and those who don't meet the capacity requirements can still perform Hajj if they choose to.

It's important to consult with Islamic scholars for specific guidance on your situation.

The number of Hajj pilgrims fluctuates each year. Historically, the average number of attendees is around 2.3 million. However, the latest numbers (from 2023) show a total of roughly 1.84 million pilgrims.

The annual Hajj pilgrimage brings millions of Muslims together in a profound display of unity and faith. This year, as we embark on this sacred journey, we come together with a shared desire – to experience the blessings of Hajj in an environment that reflects the purity and reverence we hold for the holy sites.

While countless dedicated individuals work tirelessly to maintain cleanliness around the Haram, the sheer number of pilgrims can sometimes lead to unintentional littering. We understand that amidst the crowds and excitement, waste disposal might not always be at the forefront of our minds.

This message serves as a gentle reminder to ourselves and all pilgrims. Let's embrace the responsibility of keeping the Haram pristine, not just as a matter of hygiene but as an extension of our spiritual devotion. Every piece of trash responsibly disposed of contributes to a more blessed and uplifting experience for all.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of cleanliness, stating, "Cleanliness is half of faith." By embodying this teaching during Hajj, we can enhance our spiritual journey and ensure a more respectful environment for our fellow pilgrims and the local community.

May this year's Hajj be a time of profound spiritual growth, marked by unity, respect, and a collective commitment to a clean and sacred environment. Through our small acts, we can create a lasting impact on the holy grounds and on one another.

It should be our collective will, responsibility to act and spread the message of responsibly disposing off the trash and maintaining the pristine Haramain

Remember, a blessed Hajj experience goes hand-in-hand with fulfilling our responsibility to keep the holy grounds pristine.

It's a truth we all acknowledge – littering disrespects the sanctity of the Haram and surrounding areas. Discarded water bottles, food wrappers, and other waste not only create an unpleasant environment but can also pose health risks.

We, as pilgrims, stand at a crossroads. We come to Makkah seeking spiritual growth and purification. Let us extend that desire for purity to the environment we share.?

Remember, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized cleanliness, stating, "Cleanliness is half of faith." Let's embody this teaching by keeping the holy grounds pristine. A clean Hajj experience is a blessed Hajj experience, for ourselves and for our fellow pilgrims.

May this year's Hajj be a journey of spiritual enrichment and a collective effort towards a clean and respectful environment.

What can we do?

Make a Difference: Practical Steps for a Clean Hajj

  • Be a Bin User: Always dispose off your own trash in designated bins and encourage others to do the same.
  • Respectful Disposal: Mindfully dispose of waste in designated bins, honoring the sanctity of the pilgrimage and upholding cleanliness.
  • Carry Waste Bags: Make it a habit to carry small, lightweight waste collection bags to collect both your own trash and any litter you encounter.
  • Minimize Waste: Be mindful of what you bring. Opt for reusable water bottles, containers, and utensils to minimize single-use plastics. Choose biodegradable toiletries and avoid excessive packaging.
  • Clean Up if You See It: If you see litter, pick it up and dispose of it properly. Every small act collectively makes a significant difference.

Spreading Awareness and Collaboration

  • Gentle Education: With kindness, share the importance of cleanliness and responsible waste management with fellow pilgrims. Inspire others to join in preserving the purity of the holy sites.
  • Leading by Example: Exemplify virtuous behaviour by practising good hygiene and environmental stewardship.
  • Sincere Participation: Offer your assistance in organised cleanup activities to contribute to physical cleanliness and enrich your spiritual journey.
  • Support Local Initiatives: Support local businesses promoting sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

Social Media Advocacy

  • Social Media Influencers: Vloggers and social media influencers can spread the message in their local languages, making it accessible to a wider audience.
  • Be a Social Advocate: Individually, post on your social media accounts about the Clean Hajj campaign and the message it carries.
  • Spread Awareness on WhatsApp: Update your WhatsApp status with the campaign message to raise awareness amongst your contacts.
  • Personal Outreach: Call your relatives and friends embarking on Hajj to inform them about the campaign and their responsibility towards a clean pilgrimage.
  • Follow a #Hashtag: Post all your comments, suggestions and posts along with #CleanHaj tag to make it spread across in unison message.

Creative Advocacy

  • Design for Change: If you're a designer, or can use tools like Adobe Express or Canva, create banners conveying the Clean Hajj message. Share them online and encourage others to do the same.

Long-Term Vision for a Sustainable Hajj

  • Recycling Stations: Advocate for establishing recycling stations for separating and disposing of recyclable materials.
  • Biodegradable Waste Management: Encourage the use of biodegradable waste bags and composting facilities for organic waste.
  • Community Clean-up Initiatives: Organize or participate in community clean-up efforts to maintain cleanliness in and around the pilgrimage sites.
  • Education and Awareness Programs: Support educational workshops and programs to inform pilgrims about waste management and environmental conservation.
  • Collaboration with Authorities: Collaborate with local authorities and environmental organizations to implement sustainable waste management practices and infrastructure improvements. Advocate for prioritizing environmental conservation in Hajj planning.

By embracing these practices, utilizing social media for positive change, and working together, we can ensure a clean, respectful, and spiritually enriching Hajj experience for all.
