Do we need a revolution to address the Climate Change issue?
You often hear me quoting famous sayings or even delivering my own words surrounding the resolve of climate change and my solutions on how to slow down the process, but do we need a revolution to actually make this difference?
2020 has seen many a change in people’s mindsets and we have witnessed some seriously sad times. Throughout this time, the world in my eyes has shrunk and we have seen the communications technology really come to the front. I find myself now meeting on Zoom, MS Teams and Whatsapp for 18 hours a day.
Within my industry it has become the most exciting time and we are now seeing the world of industry starting to re-set and create the ‘Control – Alt – Delete Effect’ everywhere. In my industry I have also witnessed significant collaboration specifically with Renewables, Energy Management and Environmentalists.
On 14th May 2020, I was invited to join a networking group called, ‘The Clean Energy Revolution’ and I found it interesting that there was a global group discussing ‘energy matters’ with daily growth to the group. When I joined, we had about 60 members and were sharing knowledge. I was shocked that this group of individuals from all over the world were discussing and sharing their challenges around the industry and marketing their work. During this time I have forged some key relationships with the group and understood that we all have the same challenges.
It is from here I started sharing my words:
“We all speak different languages but we all speak the same language of reducing kWh, reducing emissions and saving our planet”.
This week the group is coming into its first year and I must personally thank Mr. Brian Scott, from Canada for his courage and determination in forming this group and in my eyes starting the revolution. The group now sits at 155 experts from all around the world. Not everyone is active in the group, but it shows there are 155 individuals out there who believe in this process and we see this growing daily.
In my industry I am an Energy Expert with over 40 years experience, wanting to bring knowledge to the industry and to give back my experience in order to help others. I have a mission to bring knowledge to energy experts around the world. As well as giving my knowledge, I am also still hungry to learn. We have one problem though as with just 155 members within a group, as a percentage of now 7.9 billion people in the world, this is just not enough.
I have always stated that climate change cannot be stopped, but it can be slowed down, and I am wondering whether a ‘revolution’ is now needed as we just don’t see enough action. We have global legislations that talk about the year 2030, 2040 and further.
This is not now and legislation just does not have the ferocity to address the issues now. Why should we wait for these dates?
Please let me just clarify the word ‘revolution’. It is a strong word and I can assure you that I am not becoming an activist in any way, however, this word in my opinion is used as a marketing adjective to excite the market and our industry to come together and collaborate. This is what we need to make a difference. If we don’t create collaboration, the planet could be a very different place in years to come. People have to admit now that we are already witnessing differences. It’s now May in the UK and we have not really had any real glimmers of the Spring this year.
There are many solutions available to create and fix this problem but none of these problems will ever be addressed unless collaboration is involved. A starting point for me will be for organisations to forget a very key word and that is ‘competition’, and to begin understanding that there is enough cake out there for everyone to eat. The next approach is to start talking with each other and sharing knowledge. This knowledge doesn’t mean you are going to transfer your skills or your talent. For instance, I could read a book on how to become a ‘brain surgeon’ over the weekend but it doesn’t automatically mean that as of Monday, I am going to start to do brain surgery. It is all relative as sharing the knowledge is providing awareness.
This is the reason that I have developed the ART of energy management and the four principles which all start with ‘awareness’.
There are many platforms out there that lean towards my approach and the one I am particularly proud of is the Clean Energy Revolution (#Cleanenergyrevolution). This is a growing team of experts from around the world that have come together to share knowledge and their expertise. The group is made up of students, businesses, entrepreneurs, experts, podcast experts, doctors in their field and enthusiasts.
I honestly believe that groups like this can make a huge impact on this planet as they drive awareness, create debate and they challenge back the argument as there is always an argument and a different mindsets. In my opinion, we do need a ‘revolution’, but in terms of a ‘turnaround’ and a sudden change in the way we approach the problem. The payoff could be amazing. We have already witnessed some of the payoff when the whole world was in lockdown with no cars on the road, very little planes in the sky, the industry slowed down and public transport was scaled back. Overnight, the air became cleaner and the waters clearer. This can happen and it can happen very quickly but with a balance I’m sure.
If you are in the renewable, energy management or the environmental industry, go to the LinkedIn search and type in #cleanenergyrevolution and actually witness some of the knowledge being shared within this group. Alternatively come and chat with me directly and I will help you join this group where you can share your knowledge. We are currently reviewing a website and seeing how we can expand our collaboration.
