?? Claudine Gay resigns from Harvard

It’s Wednesday, January 3 — people are talking about Claudine Gay’s resignation from Harvard, the idea of “dressing your age”, and more.

As always, we’ve summarized and organized the different shades of perspective, so you can see the big picture quickly. Here at Shades we believe that seeing multiple points of view is the best way to stay informed.

???Claudine Gay resigns from Harvard

Gay's resignation has sparked debate: Some say it was overdue, while others see a loss for diversity and academic freedom.

???The Guardian: Amidst dual antisemitism and plagiarism scandals, Claudine Gay resigned as Harvard's president, citing “extraordinary challenges.”

?? The NY Post said it’s about time! Gay's resignation was long overdue, and the fact that it took so long raises questions about the vetting process and the Board's decision-making criteria.

?? An NYT opinion agreed: In fact, Gay should've never been president in the first place. Blame the fiasco on Harvard's focus on social justice over merit.

?? But a separate piece from The Guardian was bummed: Donors flexed their power to drive Gay out, and their influence could stifle free speech and academic integrity at Harvard.

?? The WSJ thinks that Gay destroyed Harvard's reputation. Her resignation gives it the chance to appoint someone better.

???Is “dressing your age” still a thing?

Is the concept of “dressing your age” outdated and sexist, or just a way to describe striving for balance in your wardrobe?

?? The concept of “dressing your age” has long been debated in fashion circles. Hansen’s Clothing says it's about balance — classic styles are always a good call.

?? But Fashion Journal disagrees: “Dressing your age” is an outdated and sexist idea that limits personal expression.

?? The AARP argues that people ditch “age-appropriate” fashion norms and embrace personal flair. It's OK to be bold, even in your golden years!

?? On the other hand, the NYT thinks that dressing your age is less about rules, and more about self-perception and comfort. Clothes have connotations, whether you like it or not.

?? Merrick’s Art says it's easy: Your 20s are for experimenting, your 30s are for refining, and your 40s are for wearing classic pieces.

Shades poll: What do you think about "dressing your age"?

?? It's an outdated and sexist concept

?? It's a harmless phrase about finding balance in your fashion

????♂? I really don't care what people choose to wear!

“Stop Weaponizing Antisemitism”, demands the former Director of Harvard Hillel (1993-2010) in his Harvard Crimson article. Bernie Steinberg writes, “Now, as an elder leader, with the benefit of hindsight, I feel compelled to speak to what I see as a disturbing trend gripping our campus, and many others: The cynical weaponization of antisemitism by powerful forces who seek to intimidate and ultimately silence legitimate criticism of Israel and of American policy on Israel. In most cases, it takes the form of bullying pro-Palestine organizers. In others, these campaigns persecute anyone who simply doesn’t show due deference to the bullies. The recent effort to smear our new University President, Claudine Gay, is a case in point.”? Full article: thecrimson.com/article/2023/12/29/steinberg-weaponizing-antisemitism/ Sadly, the vendetta against Claudine Gay is based on a lie because protests did NOT call for genocide, they were calling to stop a genocide, as this article explains:? Calling for genocide is clearly despicable, but "intifada" doesn't mean anything remotely close to genocide:? https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/calling-genocide-clearly-despicable-intifada-doesnt-mean-marwan-saleh-dw7vc/?trackingId=YWQ9EWiGS8K4M9KymkizxA%3D%3D
