Instead of teacher-dictated rules, Institute classroom norms. Here's how. Ask your students, what they want.

  1. What kind of learning environment do you need to succeed in this class?
  2. Which behavior distracts or disturbs the learning environment?
  3. What does a positive classroom culture mean to you?After the students answered individually, ask them to discuss their thoughts in groups. Then, together as a team, we can create our norms based on their discussions. Putting the kids in charge of the rules will transform the classroom atmosphere.
