Classroom lighting: A key factor in enhancing learning

Classroom lighting is much more than just a matter of visibility; it is a crucial element that directly affects student performance and well-being. A recent study by the Department of Pedagogy at the Universitat Rovira i Virgili in Catalonia, Spain, delves into how lighting can transform the educational environment, highlighting its impact on cognitive processes and ultimately on learning.

Building on the research of Monteoliva, which establishes that "lighting is one of the most critical physical characteristics in a learning space", the researchers conducted a comprehensive literature review. The aim was to understand how classroom lighting factors influence learning processes and how they can be optimised to improve academic outcomes.

The study identified seven key aspects of classroom lighting that directly impact cognitive processes. These include improved academic performance, increased attention, speed in task execution and accuracy in work. The research concluded that adequate lighting is critical for students to maintain their attention and concentration during school activities. In particular, lights that simulate natural light, such as LED lights with colour temperature adjustments, can reduce eye strain and keep students more alert for longer periods.

In addition, the type and quality of lighting was shown to have a significant impact on cognitive performance. Various studies have found that bright white light, similar to natural daylight, improves students' ability to process information and solve complex problems.

The review also yielded other relevant findings, including:

  • The recommendation is to use tunable LED lighting, which is not only energy efficient but also allows the colour temperature to be adjusted in real time to create a more conducive learning environment.
  • The importance of implementing dynamic lighting systems in classrooms. This allows the light to be automatically adjusted according to the activity being carried out, which promises to make the classroom a more adaptive and favourable environment for learning.
  • The balance between natural and artificial light is crucial. Although controlled artificial light remains the most commonly studied option, finding the right balance with daylight could make a significant difference in students' academic performance.

Classroom lighting should not be seen solely as a functional aspect, but as a strategic tool to improve student learning and well-being. Investing in lighting systems that simulate natural light and adapt to the needs of the moment can be a key to boosting academic performance and creating a healthier and more effective educational environment. As technology advances, classrooms of the future have the potential to become increasingly smart and adaptive spaces, where lighting plays a central role in educational success.
