To make 4 Fresh Whiskey Sours:
Combine 3/4 cup of whiskey, 1/2 cup of fresh squeezed lemon juice, 1/2 cup of fresh squeezed lime juice, and 2/3 cup of simple syrup. With crushed ice, fill a cocktail shaker half way to the top. Add cocktail mixture. Shake for 30 seconds. Pour into glasses and garnish each with 3 maraschino cherries on munchkin skewers.
Sour History
The name "sour" dates back to the 1700's. The British Royal Navy claimed, based on the findings of Scottish physician, James Lind, that "a lemon or lime a day would keep the scurvy away". Sailors, subsequently began to enjoy spirits mixed with citrus juice softened by sugar. The trifecta of liquid flavor became known as the sour.
Sour Stories
In more recent history, Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald met at the Dingo Bar in Paris. They enjoyed burning the candle at both ends while consuming a hearty and heavy supply of whiskey sours. The sour was perfect for Hemingway's writing style: refreshing, yet action packed.
Sour Laughs
Comedian, Dorian Crook, who is credited with making the sour a classic cocktail readily available in modern times noted that the three necessities for a perfect night are: "a whiskey sour, a meteor shower and a cab that arrives before you put your hand out." Cheers.
