To the Class of 2021: Embrace Constant Change

To the Class of 2021: Embrace Constant Change

To the Changemakers,

This past year has changed communities and conversations, structures and systems in ways we could never have imagined.

Across the globe, we’ve seen new ways of learning and teaching, new industries, new tools and new programs connecting us globally. We’ve seen new and necessary changes focused on promoting inclusivity and advancing equity (although there is much more to do). Even at ETS we’ve had major changes: from expanding into new areas with tools like gradschoolmatch.com, to allowing students to test at home for the first time ever, to renewing our commitment to making equitable education accessible to all students.

Now your lives are changing once more with another momentous milestone: graduation.

I know you can handle yet another life change because this generation has proven to be the catalyst for change. I’m inspired by the drive, creativity, perseverance and resilience the Class of 2021 has shown. As you cross the stage this graduation either on campus or at home, my challenge to you is simply this:

1)    Never Stop Learning

The best way to create change is to always be learning. This generation knows better than most the power of embracing new people, different voices and new experiences — and learning from this “new.” Not just in this next phase of your life, but throughout your entire life, I encourage you to learn what sets you apart. Take time to appreciate these differences while dismantling any privilege within them. Discover how you can continue to make change in your communities and close the gap on any inequity that exists. Stay curious and recognize that what you don’t know is almost as powerful as what you know!

2)    Become a Mentor

While no longer taking tests in school, continue to test yourself with these two questions: Am I learning something new every day? Am I limiting myself or others, and what can I do to change that? Because starting now, Class of 2021, learning becomes a two-way street.

Your role as changemakers is to bring the classes below you, with you. Mentor a younger student, become a mentor at an organization. Give back by lifting up your community. Nelson Mandela first inspired a generation with this quote 17 years ago — and it has never been truer today:

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

Your generation has already been marked by change. Embrace it. Use your education to uncover what’s possible as graduates. Push yourselves to break boundaries, explore your ambitions and seek change in your communities and the world. Changemakers, I’m excited to see the impact you make!
