The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn't being said. - Peter F Drucker
“It’s been quite hard for our business in the last few months. We have lost quite a few customers.”
The initial discussion with the team in an organisation that I am working with brought to light a very significant discovery for the team.
In the current times, there has been a lot of change in people’s behaviour which has led to changes in market behaviour, consumer behaviour, buying strategies and most importantly in the aspirations that people have.
We all operate from a perspective that we know our customers, we know our people. But we forget that our perspective may not be accurate anymore. A lot has changed.
In the current times, one skill which has become the most important for anyone is “listening”.
As leaders, it’s important to listen to your people. Not just to understand them but also to show them “how” to do it with their customers too.
Listening is beyond the spoken words. That’s just 30% of the communication.
Listening is about that 70% which will help you look beyond “your perspective” and understand theirs.
What constitutes that 70%?
I am mostly told, it’s about the body language.
Yes, but body language is just one part of it.
- Listening is also about emotions.
- Listening is also about preferences.
- Listening is also about values.
- Listening is also about beliefs.
- Listening is also about mindset.
When we learn how to “listen”, we can connect and they can relate to us.
And it first starts within the team.
The story of every individual who constitutes your team is an example to develop your listening.
It’s not about narrating “life stories”... it is about looking at where their eyes are moving when they speak.
It’s about observing how their face changes when they speak to people or work on projects.
It’s about observing the varying emotions in their voice.
It’s about noticing the beliefs which control their thoughts and their actions.
This level of “deep listening” is quite simple to develop and can certainly be the game changer for any team or organisation.
Open your eyes, your ears, your heart, and your head.
Align your senses and listen to yourself. You will notice the difference you can make in your life.
And when you change, everything around you changes.

3 年It's truly a huge game changer when we are aware and know how to listen ( i.e. read) the signs ( so to speak). Whilst it becomes easy when one knows how, knowing involves learning. Which, in turn, involves a growth mindset and the intention to serve and see others grow. Love the simple manner you've depicted how important and beneficial listening is Naheed Khan.
