Claiming for Flood Damage

Claiming for Flood Damage

With the rain finally easing and the flood waters beginning to subside, many people will be looking to make a claim for flood damage to their property. However, here are FIVE TOP TIPS from a local insurance management company, Tangilble Claims Solutions (TCS), to help you avoid some common practices by insurers.

  1. Make you a cash offerNEVER accept a cash settlement as it will invariably be far less than the true repair cost. If you’ve recently accepted a cash settlement, it is NOT too late. Get in touch with PKS and we will guide you with the help of TCS.
  2. Tell you that the water staining can be painted overIf plaster or plasterboard is wet-stained, it needs to come off. If you try to paint over it, the staining will come back after a while because the wall behind will still have damp trapped behind it.
  3. Tell you that the plaster only needs to come off up to the high water markOnce moisture gets behind plaster it slowly works its way up the wall behind through capillary action. ALL the plaster must come off.
  4. Suggest high-speed dryingThis is quicker and cheaper for them, but if a building is dried-out too quickly significant damage can occur which can cause all manner of problems in the future.
  5. Refuse to cover for certain things on the basis of “consequential damage”This is their big “get out” and unless you understand your policy terms (and what they really mean), you can find yourself having to pay for an amount of the work. If an insurer even mentions the term, please get in touch ASAP.

Tangible Claims Solutions have vast experience in the insurance and building sectors and in carrying out flood damage repairs and restoration work.

If you need to make a claim, or are in the process of a claim for flooding and recognise any of the above TCS can help. Get in touch with PKS today, and together we can make your claim less stressful!
