I recently received a couple Community Top Voice badges from LinkedIn. I admit that I’m a sucker for gold stars and badges.

Today, I want to talk about these special recognitions. They celebrate your unique voice and contributions and I don't see enough of you claiming them.

What Are These Badges?

The badges are like shiny trophies. They show your expertise and dedication in your field. Earning a Community Top Voice badge can open doors to new opportunities and connections. It can also help you stand out.

So, what exactly are these badges? They're honors given to people who make high-quality content on LinkedIn. They focus on a specific subject. Think of them as digital badges of honor. They highlight your thought leadership and influence in your industry.

Why Are They Helpful?

They boost your credibility and visibility on the platform. When people see that you've earned a Top Voice badge, they're more likely to trust your expertise and engage with your content.

Plus, it's a great way to stand out. It attracts potential employers, clients, or collaborators.

Ok, get to the good stuff: How do you earn one!?

Community Top Voice badges are given to “members who make noteworthy contributions to collaborative articles on LinkedIn.” Getting one of the light gold Community Top Voice badges is fairly easy. Here is the process that I used. It got me 3 Top Voice badges on my LinkedIn profile. They were for Planning, Systems Thinking, and Professional Mentoring.

  1. Start by going to LinkedIn’s Collaborative Articles section on their website. On the right-hand side, you’ll see many suggested topics to contribute to. Pick one.
  2. To get a Top Voice badge, you’ll need to be in the top percentage of contributors to a certain topic. So, contribute to the collaborative articles under that specific topic each week. You can earn as many badges as you'd like. But, for your first badge, pick a less popular topic.
  3. Each week contribute to a few articles. Your responses don't have to be long. Your feed will feature them, and your network can engage with your response.
  4. Once you reach the top 5% of contributors, you will magically receive the coveted gold badge. Easy, huh!

Once you've earned one, how do you use it?

Once you receive a badge, you can easily add it to your LinkedIn profile. Go to your profile and click on the settings button (the pencil icon):

*If you have multiple badges, you’ll want to select the badge that you’d like to appear on your profile. You can select only one badge at a time. You’ll then click on the button to show the badge in the intro section of your profile.

Worth It?

I think doing this is worth it. It took minimal effort and approximately two hours per badge. In the process of responding to collaborative articles, I was able to generate meaningful engagement with my responses. Cool bonus!

I think the badge adds credibility to my LinkedIn profile. It has been fun to hop in and answer questions on collaborative articles, too.

Give it a try. There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of subjects you can earn a badge for. You're an expert in a few. Go for it!
