Cladding remediation projects - Wheres the Clerk of Works?
Gerry Sharpe FACQP, MIConstM
Chief Executive - ACQP | Construction Quality Management
A Clerk of Works (CoW) is crucial for cladding remediation projects because they ensure quality control, compliance, and safety throughout the process. Given the complexity and regulatory requirements of cladding remediation—especially after the Grenfell Tower tragedy—having a dedicated professional on-site is essential. There's still too many Cladding works being undertaken by contractors who still allow poor and often non compliant works to be carried out. This is why its so important to get this rework done safely and correctly.
1. Quality Assurance & Workmanship
2. Compliance with Regulations
3. Fire Safety & Material Verification
4. Site Supervision & Contractor Oversight
5. Defect Identification & Risk Mitigation
6. Resident & Stakeholder Reassurance
7. Cost & Programme Management
Conclusion
A Clerk of Works is an independent, on-site quality inspector who ensures that cladding remediation is done safely, correctly, and in full compliance with regulations. Their presence helps protect residents, property owners, and the public from future fire risks and structural issues, making them indispensable for such critical projects.
