CJI Chandrachud Lauds Enactment of New Criminal Laws

The enactment of these three laws, namely the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023; the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023; and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, marks a significant departure from the earlier legal frameworks, namely the Indian Penal Code 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act, 1872. CJI Chandrachud underscored the importance of these legal reforms, stating, "The enactment of three new criminal laws by the Parliament is a clear indicator that India is changing.
